i have a rescue giant pyrenees that needs trimmed very badly. He's very matted and has very thick hair. taking him to a groomer is not a good option, he is not a good car rider, and gets super stressed. anyway looking to buy a set of trimmers to do the job at home. have trimmed dogs and horses before but the trimmers i have wont do the job on him. anyone have a recommendation on a trimmer i can buy to get the job done.

I don't have a dog that I have to clip but I did do a quick googly search for 'dog trimmers for thick hair' and the Wahl Animal KM10 seems to come highly recommended. Like anything that's worth a darn, though, you'll pay North of $200 for 'em.
Those Pyrenees are great dogs. A guy I knew got one to protect his flock of sheep. The dog acted pretty lethargic during the day but at night he became a coyote killin' machine. The first night the dog was with the sheep he took down 6 coyotes.
I have an old pair of Oster A5 clippers, the motor rotates and the head goes back and forth, they're not the idiot kind with the head that vibrates within a changing magnetic field. They're adjustable and have steel blades. I've never sharpened them more than a couple strokes on an oil stone and they cut very well. They get very hot in use, so allow time to cool off. I use TriFlo lubricant on the blades.
Go slow, let the clippers do the work and the hair should just peel off in long swathes. I'd recommend going right down to the skin plus 1/2" beneath the matts and let it grow back with regular brushing.
God bless you for taking good care of that rescue.
Word of caution, before you buy the clippers check him out with something else that you have on hand that makes the clipper noise. He may be terrified of the noise they make
+10 this may be your biggest issue, if so you may have to go to vet and get something to almost knock him out, for the car ride and the clipping.........
he is a great dog. i no longer have livestock but he has taken to the other dog and the two barn cats. took me almost a year to convince him that this is his new home and to learn the boundaries. he doesnt seem bothered by the sound of the clippers i have, they just dont do the job.
Cow clipper will handle the matted heavy hair and they will stay much cooler than dog clippers. Try Rural King or Tractor Supply.
I'm not a farm kid, but would the sheers they use for sheep work. Sure seems like they would be heavy duty enough
A muzzle can be your friend.
I took mine to the vet for teeth cleaning, claw trim, shots, checkup, and above all, grooming. The grooming part was $150 and well worth it. That was one dog. The other is scheduled for next week.
Maybe your vet can give you a pill to calm your dog down so that he can accept the ride.
BTW, the Great Pyrenees is a great dog. Crossbreed them with the Anatolian Shepherd and you have an exceptional dog.
Look around there are dog groomer who will come to your house. That is what I do, there is a lady who has a big van set up for grooming dogs. I have her come by about every 6 months to groom my 2 Golden retrievers. I have groomed them in the past but it really sucks and I am not the best groomer. I have the Oyster animal clippers with a skip point #5 blade and its ok on thick hair.
One thing you really need to have is a good slicker brush and brush him every other day. This will keep his coat smooth. When the coat gets matted they get hot spots.
Brush
Clippers
You will need to do a good search on which blades you will need. 7F or a 5F would be my guess. When looking for blades look at the Qster Clipper Chart.
Good luck.
