It caught me: Update

I haven't ran from COVID but I had been fortunate not to catch it, until now. I fellow I played poker with a few days ago let us know he had contracted it.

I didn't feel good Friday, body was achy and I thought if may have been from climbing in and out from under my tractor equipment Thursday. Something I don't do often anymore. Friday i tried pedaling the stationary bike and didn't make it my usual length of time, it was a struggle . I felt worse yesterday causing me not to go to Cincinnati as planned. Then I got word this other fellow was ill and had tested positive for COVID, that explained it. I have the usual symptoms but not as bad as some people I know have had. I had the J&J vaccine in April which think I has given me a head start on fighting this.

I feel better today than I did yesterday morning My lungs as better, the cough is not as painful. I was even able to pedal the bike for 15 minutes, not hard and I didn't work up a sweat or breath hard but was able to do it. Just moving the body and these two new knees.

I had stuff here to help with this if it came about and I'm glad I do. I expect it will pass quickly. its a little aggravating to have dodged it for over a year then get it. I see no need to be tested, given the symptoms and the timing after being exposed. Yes there is other things it possibly could be, but given the symptoms, the timing and my experience, IMO it's unlikely.

I have a cough, it hurts but not bad, I have body aches but they are manageable with over the counter medications. I'm able to take in fluids and food. A mild case for sure and I'm glad it is, so far anyway.

Just sharing my experience.

Sorry you are sick no matter what it is. If Covid I hope the vaccine does what it is supposed to do and keeps your symptoms mild. Get well soon. Bob

I'm glad you didn't get the super nasty version, and I hope you don't have any lingering issues. Good luck.

If you were vaccinated in April I would be getting a test. There is another cold virus going around here that has same symptoms. Headaches and gastrointestinal ... the guy I know thought he had it and didnt

    Update:

Well things haven't went as well as I had hoped they would. I'm better, but not before getting worse and there is still road ahead to travel. After having three rough days I went to my doctor last Monday. My doctor is also a friend, he had me park around back and came out to the truck. He checked me over, swabbed me, and sent me some prescriptions to the pharmacy.

By Wednesday I was doing pretty well and proclaimed I had it whipped and was just waiting for my shut in time to run out. During a coughing episode that same Wed I felt some rib cartilage tear in the right rear. Thursday I felt a cough episode coming on and was getting up from my recliner to get a pillow and splint my now sore ribs. The cough didn't wait, I was in a twisted bind and coughed hard enough I felt a couple of ribs move out and the cartilage tear pretty bad, I pushed the ribs back in.

Later Thursday the Dr. office called to give me the COVID positive results of the swab. I mentioned the injured ribs to the nurse calling me and she suggested having the doctor check them out and I informed her it would be a bother but I would get by. That was a mistake on my part.

By Friday evening rib pain had taken over my life. No matter positioning or splinting a coughing episode would leave me soaked in sweat, weak and gasping. I'm a strapping fellow, been through a thing or two, but these ribs were taking me to the mat. Try as I might I could not clear secretions. I went down hill Friday night and by Saturday morning I knew if I didn't get some help I was headed to real trouble. I called my Doctor. My son stopped by while I was waiting on the Dr. to get back with me and wanted to take me to a hospital. I told him I would talk to the doctor first.

The doctor had me meet him at his office, he was concerned and brought up putting me in the hospital. I told him if I could obtain some pain reduction I could clear this on my own. I've known him for decades and worked countless hours with him in the medical field. He told me he would give me until that evening and if I wasn't doing better he was admitting me. I picked up some pain meds and some others and headed home to try. It was rough, I'm better. Worse than I was Wednesday before I pulled the ribs but doing okay. I'm sleeping in the recliner with C-PAP. Ice, heat, meds and forced splinted coughing has kept stuff moving.

The doctor called me Saturday evening, Sunday morning and again this morning. I have an O2 saturation monitor and was able to give him good information. He told me I had tested positive for three different variants, Delta, South African, and Brazilian. Which shows us how much and how fast this stuff mutates and strains aren't independent from each other.

The COVID infection itself I was handling fine. Torn ribs almost put me in the hospital and very likely the ICU. Of course the ribs were complications of the COVID. Working in the medical filed I've seen people go down hill from similar issues.

Just sharing, I'm way better off than a lot of people. I went from sailing along with this stuff as a minor nuisance to being taken to the mat by a muscle skeletal complication. Better living through chemistry and some stubbornness managed to avoid a serious pneumonia and what ever followed, so far anyway.

Glad you seem to be on the mend. Congested lungs and bad ribs would be a pretty bad combination. I have had both but fortunately not together. If you haven't already, try some vitamin D and some zinc to help boost your immune system and speed up the healing. Won't hurt and just might help. Something like Mucinex might help so you don't have to cough so hard to clear the lungs. Good luck, Bob

I'm on all the vitamins, was on most before getting this. Mucinex, lots of water and some other stuff.

I feel your pain. I fell off a ladder years ago and separated 3 ribs. It hurt just to breathe. It took quite a while to get over that, but eventually they healed up. The worst thing that happened was 3 sneezes in a row. I thought I was going to pass out.

Hope you get back to normal soon.
