Just got back from the ENT Dr.

I've been having issues with a plugged nose, sinus drainage, and deviated septum. The Dr told me there's only one way to fix it and that's with surgery. Basically, he will break the septum, suck out some tissue from my turbinate, then insert splints to hold the septum in place for a WEEK.
Anyone else had this procedure, and if you did, how did it go?
Thanks, Joe

Investigate balloon sinuplasty.
My uncle had it done. Worked great for about 1.5 years and then tissue grew back.------Ray
careful ya might end up sounding like winey cackling harris
I would get multiple professional opinions before having that procedure done. Good luck.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
A friend of mine had it done several years ago and considered the recover painful. In addition, just like @4205raymond uncle, it didn't last. Get a second opinion.
I had mine done in the Alaska State Junior Hockey Championships, broke all those bones and removed a whole bunch of the tissue from the whole area. It all grew back.
My little Brother had a similar procedure a few years back. Been fine so far.
Thank you all for your comments. I've had several surgeries, but this one just didn't sound right to me. I'm glad my gut feeling was substantiated by your experiences.
Thanks again,
Joe
Always get another opinion. That said, I had it done the day before Thanksgiving 2008 (along with completely cleaning out all the sinuses) and still feel great. The trick is to keep your nose cleaned out. I use a sinus rinse almost every day and it helps a lot. It'll freak you out the first few time you do it! There is NOTHING natural about shooting water up one side of your nose and letting it run out the other!!! Oh, another tip. While you're healing DO NOT SNEEZE! Trust me, voice of experience. It hurts. Like roll on the floor holding your face with tears dripping down your cheeks and thinking you might wet your pants hurts.
I lived with one of my nasal openings blocked for much of my early life. Didn't even realize it was a problem until I had an NG tube placed in that nostril after some spinal surgery back in '92.
That tube which I had to wear miserably for 2 weeks cleared whatever issue I had and I have been a clear 2 holer ever since!
DIY nasal surgery:
Maybe 30 years back, I was doing some torch cutting under a piece of equipment. Somehow a glob of * popped off, sort of bounced around a bit, and went up my right nostril. There it stuck and burned a hole through the septum into the left nostril and by that time had cooled enough to only raise a bit of blister .
This whole scenario took only seconds but as one could imagine, the pain lasted considerably longer. I can't imagine volunteering for anything remotely similar(such as the described surgery).
On the other hand, I can do some pretty cool(or gross depending on the audience) stuff using that cross over hole in my nose.
EVREYONE has a "deviated septum"! I would avoid that surgery at all costs. I have not had the procedure done, but several close family members and friend have. Its an ENT's bread and butter surgery. 99% of the time it does NOTHING to help. As said above, Neil Meds sinus rinse is you friend. Rinse DAILY, or 2 or 3 times, using sanitized(NOT well water) and also use Nasacort daily. This WILL help, may take some time if you are really stopped up. Also may need antibiotics to help clear the gunk initially. Again......I would NOT recommend that surgery.
