When it comes down to it

The 8MM Mauser, AKA the 7.92X57 cartridge, with the proper bullet construction, is a better round than the venerable 30-06 AKA 7.62X53. It really does have, all things considered, a better more efficient use of powder and ballistics. It is amazing what 0.30 does for things in bullet flight.

It still ain't no 270! Stir, stir 😁 Bob

The .270 is indeed a good un. The 6MMBR/Dasher is better and more fuel efficient ulitizing a short action, reaching WAY out there if the need be. BUT, the 8MM Mauser trumps them both for smackdown and efficiency. Ya got to admit those German engineers knew how to do it right way back then.

It's a hell of a cartridge but we helped win WWII with the 06 and and and the German 8mm wasn't what you would call popular for obvious reasons. The 06 with a 180gr bullet does a good job putting stuff on the ground in all around hunting. I don't see many folks changing at this point though the 8mm may have advantages.

But then the 9.3 and 35 Whelen cartridges hit harder than the 8mm at about the same recoil level.

The 8mm as sold here is an anemic round, due to SAAMI regulation. So many bolt actions that were designed for weaker cartridges have been converted to 8mm that loadings available here are really scaled down. The Turks, just for example, converted many '93 Mausers to '98 configuration, then re-chambered them to 8mm. But not all Turk '93s were re-worked; some were re-chambered without being converted. Then, there's the model 88 Mauser, also in 8mm, although they're rather rare.

When loaded to its potential, the 8mm is a really a very robust round. But we'll never see it as a popular round here both because of its scaled down loading and because of the sentimental attachment that we have to the venerable 06, the victor in two World Wars.

When it comes down to it...any bullet that efficiently lets the air out of a critter is quite sufficient.

No animal yet has succumbed to a headstamp.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain
