Has anyone ever gone to the knob Creek machine gun shoot as a spectator. Would it be worth a trip?

I read here recently about a machine gun shoot that was being discontinued. Can't remember if it was knob creek. Apparently the organizers were getting long in the tooth and the younger guys weren't picking up the ball. Like many things, I suppose. :<[

I have been more than a few times my youngest son and DIL have went many times also going this year . I know in the past they di some of the "trail shoots " they place set up . you can rent a lot of different MG's but trust me you can burn thru ammo faster than you can actually burn the money . also helicopter rides if interested

its the last year for knob creek not sure why maybe just too much headache any more and the owners are getting old but odds are it will be packed 2x as much as normal ( a lot even on regular times 2x a year )

its on the back side of fort knox land and was a old target area ( land ) used by the military ,

from what I was told over the years use to be the only way to get a spot on the main range was some one die and will there spot to you LOL

they have a gun shop on the property and have a gun show and related items area set up the same week as the shoot

I also once heard which makes sense a lot of million airs show up ( who else could afford to feed the guns or buy them )

night shoot really draws the crowd lots of explosions and tracers hard to explain it go on you tube and watch some of the post on the place

anti gun groups have to pass out when if they see all the "toys owned by the public in use

every type of full auto and a few cannons to me the mini guns are the stars its difficult to describe the sound of 6k or 8k rounds a minute firing off and a huge belt of ammo being fed into the gun

I would say try and go its suppose to be the last show there and if close its worth going its about a 6 or 7 hour drive for us at

least there is also a tank / Patton museum close by and its also worth the effort to visit

My youngest son has made a lot of friends and contacts while there . never hurts to have friends in high places LOL

I know I sound like I am working for them ( if they want to send me a check I would take it ) but I just always had a good time watching all the ammo get dumped into a wide range of targets

I wanted to go but covid has me ( my wife and oldest son ) cooped up and bouncing in and out of the hospitals . and sure do not want to pass it along ( Ok maybe to some politicians )

just me but if you can go , I would at least once they have more MG shoots but there out west too far for me

Will add there is a huge amount of trust and no reason to fear but thousands of people packed in and more than a few with full auto firing thousands of rounds all it would take is some one to turn around heaven forbid and face the crowd

I only say this as in the past I have seen comments why some people will not go to any such event not just knob creek but any shooting event

Evey time I have been safety is the first priority and rules are followed lots of people watching for any posibe handling issues its a large group of like minded people just having a great time enjoying ther hobby never did I Feel the least bit worried

Well ok Envious yes , worried no. lol

Update to DitchRunner's comment -- the tank museum has been moved to Ft. Benning as part of the "BRAC" fiasco.

There's still a lot of Patton stuff and a few tanks left but not what it used to be.

I've been twice and had a great time. I'm fairly close in Indy though. I was going to take something to shoot but my class-3 dealer that sold them to me told me I could just shoot one of the ones he had at his booth. Sad to hear that this year will be the last. Nothing lasts forever I guess.

    😒

It's too late for me, save yourself.

There's an outfit here in Kalispell (Machine Guns Montana) that's putting one on this year over in Big Fork. $250 for 100 rounds in a Dillon Aero... Too much for me, but it'd be a fun 2 seconds!

Too bad about Knob Creek. It's somewhat of an icon among gun nuts firearms enthusiasts.

It's really not that far from me but I've never been.

We went about 10 years ago. Spent some time in a former forum members booth, and had a great day.

The weather was perfect, they were doing competition shooting on many levels, helicopter rides over the grounds, obviously the machine gun shoot going constantly.

My son liked the cannon the most. It would rattle your chest from anywhere on the grounds.

    Good times.

Been several times in the past, not so in the last 5-6 years. Not anything like it was 10-15 years ago. Gun show part is pretty much as any recent show you might attend except its outside under a cover. No deals on ammo as in the past. Machine gun shoot is half of what is was. Still can find MG parts there as far as I know. Still worth a visit if you have not gone before. Parking is an issue , usually in a grass field and be prepared to walk a good quarter to half mile to get in the entrance. Just hope it has not rained lately. Almost got stuck in the mud a couple of times.

my youngest son and his wife should be rolling in about now ( 9:00 pm ) they spent the last three days there

one of his buddies gave him a night shoot pass to be on the firing line I am sure he will have a lot of stories and photos

sad to see it coming to a end maybe some one or group will take it over as a special venue

as far as mud several years ago my kid use to drive my wife's honda element he said ( just what you want to hear 😲 ) on a couple of the really nasty days over the years it would go thru the mud and water better than a lot of the 4x4 trucks even drive around them in the big mud holes

a lot of walking that was for sure even on good days .
