"Glad I Kept My Mouth Shut" moments

Ever have one?

Yesterday I took the dogs out to play and ran into a friend of mine. He's VERY into woodworking and I usually wind up feeling like my ability to cut a straight line ain't good enough. So we were talking about wood, and inlays, craftsmanship, and I mentioned my guitar and how I finally got the intonation where I want it.

His eyes lit up and he went off on a new tangent about playing and I was juuuuuust about to assert the fact that I play too, then he showed me a video he did where he plays all 5 parts of a song, video edited together to look like him performing with 4 clones on stage. And GOOD LORD can the guy play. He could sit in with any bluegrass / folk group you can name. Then he mentioned he played on several albums by well known country artists.

Glad I kept my mouth shut.

Dad told me about one he had back in the 70's.

He had a welding shop with a very good mechanic who didn't have enough work to keep him busy so Dad found a guy who would locate one-ton trucks that needed some work. Dad would buy them and his mechanic would fix them up to sell.

After they'd been doing that for a while Dad got a nice Ford but didn't have a buyer for it when the mechanic finished it so he parked it by the busy highway that went through town.

A few days later one of the young farmers caught Dad one day and told him he wanted the truck and he wanted to trade a silage chopper (diesel version of the one Dad had with a newer head) for it. We all knew that the chopper had tried to chop a 3-pound sledge that one of the farmer's hired hands had left in the head when working on it in the field. Hard steel hitting sharpened blades at 3000 rpm makes a racket and they just parked the chopper.

Dad calmly nodded, thought for a moment, and said he was afraid they'd have to talk some "boot" since he thought the chopper was worth quite a bit more than the truck.

When he said that the young guy just ducked his head and said he figured dad would say that and that he couldn't go more than a thousand boot for the truck.

Dad managed to keep his mouth shut and not grin as they agreed to the deal.

He was grinning when I saw him later.

He'd only paid $1,000 for the truck.

He later traded both cutters for a New Holland combine he used to cut his crops with for several years.

Yep, my old man could make a deal😂

I used to go kayaking with a guy that made guitars from scratch. People would come from all over to buy them. But he couldn’t play a lick. He said he knew what an acoustic guitar should sound like but he never bothered to learn to play one.

That's supposedly how Andre "Ice Cold" 3000 recorded the video for his 2004 rock & roll hit "Hey Yaa." He only had one day and that's why his guitarist persona is so tired.

I am a jack of all trades I can repair / build /modify / about any thing that comes at me but no way could I even be in the same ball bark as most the craftsman who turn out more a work of art than a object of function . just knowing what little I know I realize the talent and hard work and hours of practice and hands on to produce a lot of the objects they create . many years ago i learned to keep my mouth shut , maybe other than asking questions ) and my ears and mind open I found most all who have such abilities are willing some times more than happy to share there efforts

my down fall and sad part now I am older, I find my mouth engages before my brain does . hard habit to break

Like ditchrunner , I am a fairly good hand at about all of the mechanical arts . I can take it apart ,fix it and put it back together . I can modify and create tools . Given the proper tools I make a competent woodworker . I am not a master craftsman, either mechanically or artistically.
