Browning BLR in .358 Winchester

Ricci.WrightRicci.Wright Member Posts: 5,128 ✭✭✭✭

I was just handed a new in box one. I will put it in the queue and get her listed soon. I would think this would be a great combination of rifle and caliber. I wonder why the .358 Winchester cartridge isn't more popular.

Nothing wrong with it at all, just never really caught on.

    That was my question.

    I think the.35 Rem stole it's thunder. I have a m70- 308 that needs rebarreled. I'm seriously considering going to.358w.

More folks used to use it. Good cartridge for woods critters including moose. The 35 Whelen kind of replaced it though the .358 can use a shorter action and is more suitable to the lever guns. Savage chambered the 99 in .358. The 35 Whelen pushes a 35 caliber bullet faster though and Remington chambered pumps and semi-autos in the Whelen. The only 35 caliber I've hunted with is a 35 Remington which isn't even in the same league as the other two mentioned.

I think that the increased recoil over the 35 Rem turned some shooters off. Woods hunting in Michigan the 35rem has more energy than needed for whitetails and black bear so no need to step up to the 358. I've shot both in comparable weight rifles and the 358 was noticeably harder kicking. Bob

My son still has the carbine I had made up for him. Built on a Sako 579 action. After parting with a fair number of them, I settled on and kept a Ruger 77 tang safety. It doesn't have to be a "thumper" unless you want it to be as it is almost totally a hand loading proposition now.

Interesting that the 308 necked up didn't do all that well I have a Tikka chambered in 338 Federal another round that never caught on that I think is a very good round
