SSI "Windfall Elimination" -- who else has gotten hit?

Wild TurkeyWild Turkey Member Posts: 2,425 ✭✭✭✭

I taught for 15 years before blood pressure (170/110!) forced me to retire. I'm getting about a third of what I'd get if I had been able to stay the entire 35 years.

But since I'm getting retirement benefits from a source that didn't pay into SSI I only get part of what I would qualify for otherwise from my jobs before and after teaching as well as 30 years worth of Army Reserve time.

Didn't plan on drawing SSI but we all know what happens when plans meet reality🙄

Who else got smacked???

Currently they have stolen over $40,000.00 from me. My SS is less than $150 a month. There is no excuse for the pillage of the SS funds.

I put 8 1/2% of my pay into my pension & they still considered my pension a windfall. So I get half of the minimum.

It is Social Security, not SSI. (SSI is Supplement Security Insurance, a welfare program for poor people.)

Your beef is with the WEP (Windfall Elimination Provision) of the Social Security Act. You fall under that provision because you worked for a federal, state, or local government in a job that did not allow you to contribute to SS. Blame the teachers union for not telling you about the FEP. Legislation to repeal that provision has been killed in Congressional committee every year for the last 30 or so years.

If you were able to go back to work in the private sector for another 15 years (quarters of coverage require a minimum amount each year), the WEP would no longer reduce your SSA benefit. I work part time, but don't earn enough to get the minimum for coverage each year. My SSA check is $301/month. I still carry my lunch to work.

I worked, paying into SS, for over 25 years (after the no pay into SS job) and they still hit me with a reduced benefit.
