An interesting lunch with some of my Amish neighbors......
Our place is out in the sticks and we many Amish families in our general area. Over the years since we retired and moved here, I have gotten to know several of them and enjoy being around them. We have in the past hired an Amish construction crew to finish off 400 sq feet of our basement and repair a 100 plus year old cellar house on the property. They do excellent work and are very reasonable cost wise.....
Yesterday we provided lunch at our church for a roofing crew who are in the process of replacing the roof on our Sanctuary and Family Center building. The core group were the individuals who have worked around our place and a couple of new young guys.
We served them Venison Chili, ham and turkey sliders, chips and salsa, veggies/dip and my bride's cookie bars...We sat and talked work, deer hunting and farming. Great bunch of hard working gentlemen....
I think they get a bad rap sometimes. Some folks I know have nothing good to say about them, but from what I see that is mainly because they get stuck behind them once in a while on the road and just really have never bothered to get to know them.....
I was paid what I considered a complement from the head of construction crew. He once told me "When things go really bad in the World, you come live with us."

While they do rely on more and more modern tools and conveniences, I could think of a lot worst places to be if the shtf. I've never met an unpleasant Amish family. Bob
There’s a large group of Amish near us. I’ve never heard anyone disparage them. With these folks, what you see is what you get. No more and no less.
We have several Mennonite friends.....they are good as gold too.
I've had no problems with Amish or Hooterites. Good folk.
Ditto as all have said.
Not all Amish are good carpenters, found out the hard way.
Not all (any religion, creed, color or union) carpenters are good carpenters.............
I had some friends that had this crew build their house and shed recommend this group. They had also worked on the building of our church before I moved here... It is a little harder to get reviews on Amish group as they are do not have a website or any place to check them out.......
Sorry to hear you experience was not a good one......
Im guessing they're not on Angie's List.
Can they have modern guns. Do they go deer hunting.
No Amish down here in Dixie, that I know of.
Yes all of them I know have modern rifles or Muzzle loaders....6 of the 7 I talked to yesterday were looking forward to opening day of whitetail next weekend
When Amish move in, they build up and improve things. The same cannot be said for many other groups.
In the last 60 years their presence has increased greatly in SE Iowa. That's what happens when you average 8-10 kids per household.
A young fella named Johnathon built a beautiful 10x20 shed for me a good 10 years ago for my place in Virginia. His business was JZ Barns in Rural Retreat, Virginia. He was being treated for cancer and had a stroke. He started to get better and the Cancer came back with a vengence and took him. What a nice man whose 3 little boys would cling to him. His wife and three boys all grown up now still run the business down there.----------------Ray
No Amish around here that I know of
There are some Mennonite enclaves scattered about here and there .
William- you were paid about the highest compliment there is. Treasure it.
Here in VA we have a few Amish- and Hutterites, Mennonites, etc etc. The majority are very decent folks and good neighbors.
There are quite a few Amish around here. There is one man that has a business selling chain saws and other tools and accessories. He has a generator outside that powers his air compressor. From his air compressor, he ran a line to a floor stand fan that is air powered. The only lights in the place are kerosene. When they built the building they put in plenty of skylights that illuminate the showroom.
Our house was framed in by an Amish crew from Indiana. They did a good job except for the basement bathroom, where they must have lost their square. I didn't notice it until I was installing the sink and then it was very obvious from the gap in the corner.

OK :

I Grew Old Too Fast (And Smart Too damn Slow !!!) !!! :?
There are so many different groups of Amish. The most conservative Old Order still use horses and outhouses. No electricity for any reason which is why they have class B dairies as opposed to class A dairies. They will rarely mix with outsiders, as in non-Amish. They also will not work a job off their farm.
They range all the way up to the black Amish. Black Amish can own and drive cars but the cars must be black with no chrome. If there is chrome on the car they have to paint it black. The black Amish will work in local factories or other jobs, driving their black cars to and from work.
There is also a group of Amish that can use tractors but they must be from the 50s or earlier. This is 30 year old info so I don't know about today.
I liked when Harrison Ford was Amish for awhile.😉
I enjoyed it when Tim Allen and Kristy Alley joined the Amish community for a short time! 😁
"Can they have modern guns. Do they go deer hunting."
At one time, most couldn't pass a 4473 background check. They either did 'straw man' purchases or bought guns at the flea market.
Their hunting is what one would expect from a subsistence lifestyle. Kill anything/everything seen. Pass through an Amish area after a snowfall and you'll see the buggy tracks of the 'road hunters'. Now and then, you'll see a set of boot tracks going off into the weeds/brush and returning. That's where they shot a rabbit or pheasant and it doesn't make any diff if it's their land, the ROW, or someone else's property. You won't see much small game in an Amish area. Deer? They'll chase deer as far as the deer can/will run. Their land, the neighbor's land, whatever-makes no diff to them.
We've had multiple bad experiences with Amish who did carpenter work for the family up the road. The Amish showed up again during deer season and lined up in a military style frontal assault across 40 acres where they didn't have permission to be with the intent to chase deer onto another property where they did have permission.
Last time they were here, the bunny cop spent 2 hours writing violations.
