Electric vehicle charging stations

patt7638patt7638 Member Posts: 369 ✭✭✭

In Terre Haute, IN there are two, one is at the Meijer store and the other at one of the two Walmart stores. I have yet to see any vehicle at either station being charged. Of course I don't stake out either location. What is your experience about this.

Took my wife to ER by ambulance two weeks ago and one whole row of charging stations in front of my parking slot had at least 20 stations. First four stations had Teslas plugged in. Was this a coincidence or do they require more voltage? I noticed lettering on back of them all read Dual Motors, at least i think that is what they read. Does that mean Hybrid? There I sat in my almost new Ram with its internal combustion engine. Creepy----------Ray

So, if you shop at a store with charging stations, are you further subsidizing the the cost of someone else's electric vehicle?

Nah, that just wouldn't be right!

I have a question, do they have to pay to use the charging stations or are they free?

Just wondering as I have never close enough to one to see if they have some system for payment for use of the chargers.

Pretty sure you pay to use the station that pays for electric to be produced by coal lol

Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

    It depends.

Most public EC stations are free for a while when first installed. Once the neighbors with electric cars find them, & get used to free energy, that swap out new units that have a slot for a credit card.

Usually, those installed by state/local government with your tax money stay free.

I feel that all this does is consume our geological natural resources at a much faster rate.....as compared to the recent past.

I have seen several along I40 in NC. Most are by Hotels, which makes sense because it takes a while to charge up a EV.

One other observation I have made driving from NC to Ga every month is I have never been passed by an EV on the Interstate(I85 and I40). I have seen several of them in limp mode going about 20 MPH down the road and I have seen 3 of them on fire in the last 4 years. Everyone touts how fast they are and I am sure they are. A top fuel dragster is fast too as is a funny car but I don't want one to drive a 400 mile trip in.

As a going back and forth to work, 50 mile a day car I am sure they are fine but forget about long trips. I will never have one.

My FIL made good money installing Tesla charging stations in peoples garages. They are very specific about the charge they get you don't just plug them in next to the chest freezer in the garage.

When the vehicle is holding a charge can it be converted to power a home breaker box when the electricity goes out for a couple of days ?

The company that I retired from and still work at a day or 2 a week are going to install EV chargers. Some of the younger guys were going to buy Teslas and were told if you order them late October or early November, you may get it July next year. What happens may be interesting.

There some charging stations in front of the local Wal-mart which is just off of I-65.. I've never seen anyone charging a car there but then I don't get down that way much. When I was in Las Vegas I would take a walk in the mornings and walked by some Tesla charging stations and there were people charging their cars.

I think so. A friend of mine just bought a Ford 150 hybrid. He lives in an area that experiences power outages frequently and said he can run his small house with it and when the battery gets low, the truck will automatically start and charge the battery. Not sure if it will charge at a rate high enough to power the house though.

What happens if you use one of those parking spaces for a gas vehicle?

Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

you get to park closer to the door and allways can find a parking space, I do this at wallyworld, they put in over half a row for the pickup orders only, If someone questions me about parking there, I tell them " i am on my way to pick something up " as they are allways almost empty and the rest of the lot is full ...........

Hey hillbillie, you're not one of those who park right in front of the gym so you don't have to walk far to the treadmill, are you?

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

"In Terre Haute, IN there are two, one is at the Meijer store"

From this meager evidence I can only assume you're talking about the letter "R". What's my experience with this? Since graduating the Pirate Academy I've noticed a decreasing use of the letter "R". Especially since I changed out my keyboard.

    I hope this helps?

Part of the problem is that the chargers are not universal. A Tesla charger cannot be used to charge any other make. That's changing. Musk has announced that Tesla will start modifying theirs so all EVs can use them. In addition, there are companies starting up that are solely n the business of EV charging. We are kinda in the situation that owners of Model Ts were in the 1920s trying to find places to buy gasoline.
