I'm supposed to speak to high school kids tomorrow about being a lady bid-ness woman.

Thats not exactly how my friend put it....but that is the "gist" of what is going on. I told her I'd come talk to the students IF she didn't tell them what I do and we could have them guess for a bit. I'm guessing they'll think I bake cakes or play background piano for a horrible wedding singer.....who knows what they'll imagine when they meet me???

I just cannot get over how different things are from when I was in their same situation. Cell phones and the internet were just getting started.....computers weren't everywhere and they were still training girls to be secretaries who did shorthand. I still had TYPING class....with a machine that looked like it was made of cast iron that had these long arms that came up and WHACKED the ribbon that would get tangled and stuck from time to time.

I just hope I can "inspire" them to try things. My main focus that I hope to get across to them is small achievable goals can put you on a path to big things....not to think something is too hard or impossible if they are being reasonable. You cannot be an engineer if you are horrible at math for example, but you can be an amazing something else if you just get out and focus on how to stay involved in that area someway, building up skills and contacts that might open doors to the next opportunity.

Kasey, I used to give a LOT of speeches to schools and such. One of my favorite themes was "Live Your Dreams is a LIE!"

I'd ask them if I looked like an NBA center. They'd all laugh. Then I asked "What if that was my dream? How long should I keep trying to achieve that?"

After a few more examples, I'd tell them of my history. And them summarize by saying I had always done what I was good at, what I enjoyed doing. And that I had succeeded in four VERY disparate careers, for one reason: that I had followed what was actually the path of least resistance because it was the best path for me.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

My wife taught first grade and I was a logger with a small ranch. I did many show and tells with pictures, slides and baby critters. It was fun. You will be fine. Ed

    ...kids ... This is a Glock 40...

Although always described as a cowboy, Roswellnative generally acts as a righter of wrongs or bodyguard of some sort, where he excels thanks to his resourcefulness and incredible gun prowesses.

You'll do great. You've become a top seller on the world's largest online marketplace for firearms, ammo and accessories. That didn't happen without flexibility, hard work and determination. Those things can't be taught. Maybe you can inspire some youngins to find those qualities within themselves though.

You will be a hit in Remlap. The values there are I imagine ,genuine .Can you image the horror and the knashing of teeth were you to take the show on the road and try this in say San Francisco ? A gun dealer is teaching our babies how to become merchants of destruction and oppression. Seriously you will be a hit

    Hope you had fun.

I used to talk to middle and high school students on "career day" or what ever it was called that day. I've changed careers a couple of times and went to college around age 30. I would talk about the importance of a solid fundamental education as a base to build on for what ever you wanted or needed to do. I would also discuss not being afraid to change directions and things that went along with a change like that. It was fun.

It was interesting. The kids and classes are handled WAY differently than the way things were done when even my own kids were in school, not all that long ago. I cannot imagine wearing what most of the kids had on. Most looked like they were TRYING to dress as disheveled and mismatched as they possibly could....one hot mess after another roaming around. They were nice, but a lot of them were not paying any attention at all. One even had his head down on his desk with his sweatshirt hood up over his head.

They had cell phones, constantly talking to each other, not paying any attention to really anything in particular. It was two separate classes that I spoke to, some kids had questions, but most just wanted to ask something silly to draw attention to themselves.

Some had laptops going....working on whatever assignment they had or other classwork. I think the teachers pretty much go over things and leave it to the students to do the work online and "turn in" the assignments via the internet. The classroom has changed because of the online presence. The kids don't have the structure they once had because of it and it has turned the classroom setting into something that is very unfamiliar to what I remember.

I'm glad I did it. I think some of them were interested in the process, but I think most of them just want to make it through the day...the week....the year....and they will not be able to tell you much of anything that happened other than riding a bus every morning.

I would be very interested in what the students thought your hobby was.

  • Locust ForkLocust Fork Member Posts: 32,005 ✭✭✭✭

They really didn't want to guess.....they really could care less that anyone was there at all to speak to them for the most part. A few perked up and wanted to know more once they knew it involved firearms. I don't think many of them actually understood the difference between what I do and someone just selling their stuff on facebook marketplace or ebay. We went over the involvement of the ATF in my operation to try to explain government involvement. ONE kid actually what it meant to be an FFL....I was shocked. I explained that you can sell something you no longer want, but when you buy items with the specific intention of selling them for profit it becomes necessary to have an FFL. It was an interesting day for sure!

I will say they were a good bunch of kids for the most part....no troublemakers, they just seem a bit lifeless.

Interesting review. All you can say is you gave it the best shot. Wife was disturbed the students were not told to pay attention by the Teacher who must have not had any control of the class being lifeless. Times have changed. However if you got thru to just one..one child it was worth it.

My thought was on last nights Yellowstone series on TV when the little boy who the ranch took in says at the end... I know what I want to do when I grow up... and Rip ask him what is that? He says I want to be just like him and points to Mr. Dutton.

After I retired from teaching middle school I subbed some. One day at a high school we finished the work the teacher had left and I took advantage of the time to ask them about how many wanted to go to college. Most raised their hands, but when I asked what their major would be I got a lot of blank looks and then a couple of the guy said "I just want to go to parties!"

Reality is gonna smack some of them pretty hard.

One kid asked how much I made....and I told him when its "yours" you don't really make money like you do when you get a paycheck. I told him we are well over 2 million in sales for this year...but I've put money back into the business, only paying myself when I need specific things. Just this year we've added another employee, new lighting, a trailer, and took on a car payment to do all the road trips....not to mention the shed we now store our boxes and long gun cases in. Its amazing how these expenses add up. The old saying "if you aren't growing you're dying" is true when it comes to business. If you don't stay ahead of the curve, you will become irrelevant before you know it.

I used to think that were I king I would close all law schools for at least fifteen years. Now I think I would close all schools.

Glad it went well. At least the kids were just disinterested. Could have been worse.

Cause making kids behave in school may just be white supremacy.

I am going to assume this was a typical public school and I wonder if you would have gotten more attention in a charter school. Supposedly they are better.

How cool for them to hear from a successful female business person and realize they too can achieve their dreams.

Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!
