Propane stove/burner question?

dreherdreher Member Posts: 8,886 ✭✭✭✭

In your experience which product is the best stove/burner available?

What I'm looking for is a burner that will hookup to a grill tank to use as an emergency way to cook if things go south. I think I would prefer a single burner but might be willing to look at a double burner. The biggest problem I seem to have is trying to a unit that will fit directly on to grill propane tank.

Low gas usage would be a real serious consideration!

Any thoughts??

I'm heading for bed, all thoughts are appreciated!! Thanks all!! Will read in the morning!

Look at the Camp Chef products. They have single and double burner models. Also an assortment of accessories. Griddle oven, pizza oven, deep fryer. The burners can go table top or come with a stand.

I'd pick out the campstove I like- probably a 2 burner Coleman if you are not cooking for a platoon. Then shop for a 1 pound to 20 pound adapter hose. Lets you hook a grill tank to a campstove, lantern, etc instead of the usual 1 pound throwaway tanks. You can find them just about anyplace- Amazon, Tractor supply- here is one from Wally World for about $12. You will also need a tanks if you don't already have one.

I agree with the 2 burner Coleman type stove with the adapter hose . For larger cooking, think big pots of stew , one of the turkey fryer type burners does a great job . With anadjustable regulator , it can be dialed back to use with a griddle top or a frying pan .

What do you plan on cooking, small, one pot meals, or something for more than one? Do you want to have the ability to use a griddle, or other accessories? As notnow mentioned, check out campchef:

If you are going to cook or fry using a huge pot you want the most BTUs. We have a 10 gal pot we use to cook large meals and to fly large turkeys. With a 3" burner it will take 2.5 hours to fry a 24lb turkey and close to a hour for the oil to get to 325-350 degrees. With a 7" burner, it will take less than an hour to cook and 10 minutes for the oil to get hot,

OK! Adapter hose. Now it all makes sense on how to do what I want to do. I didn't know they made adapter hoses but I guess it only makes sense that they make them. At least know I know what to look for and what its called! Thanks!!

Power out, no hot water? A two burner makes it easier to heat large amounts of water for bathing. Been there, done that.

It depends on what you want it for.

We have a propane stove, and propane accessories, and a 500 gallon tank.

If the power goes out, you can just light the stove top or oven with a lighter, and are good to go.

I also have a turkey burner, not sure of the manufacturer, on a 100 pound tank. For scalding chickens and whatnot.

Coleman has worked very well for me for years.

Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

actually harbor freight sells a two burner stainless cook top that accepts the 5 gal tanks. ive had one for many years that has always worked when i need it. also i have several cajun fish cookers, and crab boiler burners if needed. all that being said i usuall just use my gas grill for cooking if necessary after hurricanes.

A Coleman is a great idea, tried and proven. Their burners are small though. Boiling liquid it shouldn't be an issue. A 12" skillet will only be heated on the middle 3 inches though. I have 4 Coleman stoves. All gas fired. I have used them during power outages. The thought of having the fumes in the house didn't appeal to me. The lanterns too are great heat sources. But again, the fumes.
