National Guard deployed after two deadly drug-gang shootouts threaten the recovery of the resort region’s tourism industry

Mexico is one place I would avoid at all cost.
My wife's best friend and her husband are at that resort! Luckily, they were out on an excursion when all hell broke loose. They're scheduled to come home tomorrow.
Mexico is on the verge of being a failed state. Its unfortunate the wall was not finished and this administration has done so poorly on illegal immigration.
Here I am having fun in Tulum, 1991
I have been to Cancun many times. We flew in there, rented a car, and got right out of town, and drove 100 miles south to the little town of Tulum. Right on the beach of the beautiful Carribean.
There was no crime in that part of Mexico in the nineties and we had a great time down there. Climbing the fantastic pyramids of the Maya ruins and snorkeling in the crystal waters.
But now the country has just gone to crap. I wouldnt go back if you paid me.
I was at the Cancun Moon Palace back in 2008 and noticed the security shack that was at the main gate. As I explored the area it dawned on me that those two guys carrying what I believe were Uzi's were the only visible security. I realized then that if someone was intent on mayhem coming in from the ocean was the easiest and quickest way in and out. I'm kinda surprised it's taken this long.
NOT NOW............BUT........
Two of my friends and I flew from Houston to Cancun in 1996 with our mountain bikes taken apart and boxed up. We all had panniers and guide books. We landed in Cancun and assembled our rides, then proceeded down the coastal highway. We rode all day and bought sisal hammocks to sleep in at night on the beach "palapas". The greatest trip of my life.
Would I try that now? Hell no.
BTW........we made it all the way to Belize. Stored our bikes above the bar of a Canadian ex-pat, and made the rest of the trip by various means.....................which is a whole 'nother story. We ended up making the rounds of every Central American country exccept Panama................which I went to a few weeks later to visit my wife and her family (she was down there visiting at the time).
,,,I wont be going this year, but I hope to go next year...I really enjoy Cozumel, Cancun, and all the Islands in that area...IF you leave the island of Cancun, cross the bridge and go into the city, it's filthy, I did it one time, and went back to the island ASAP...I'm not skittish about Mexico, been in about all the Texas/Mexico border towns, and pretty much all over Mexico, but the city right off the island was about the worst Ive seen,.,plenty of things to do without leaving the island...
...I was in Nuevo Laredo when one of the Cartels machine gunned a couple of guys in the street...you have to realize the Cartels make a LOT of money from tourists that frequent all the "Boys Towns", and most every other business up and down the Mexican US border...they do not want to lose that income...thats why the killing of a tourist is all most unheard of...I bet the guy shot on the beach was a Mexican National or South American...and a criminal...
...When I was younger, I spent a year in Mexico, wandering thru the entire country...once you leave the border towns, the people are peasants for the most part, but as friendly as you will meet anywhere in the world...and the diving in the entire area is fantastic...
No way..not even with an uzi
Well it is probably safer than Chicago, New York city, St Louis, Philly, but I won't go to those places either. Bob
Daughter's out laws went to Cozumel & had a connecting flight in Monterey on the way back. The father forgot to add the travel days to their paperwork & their daughter wasn't allowed on the plane. YUP, a cute, blue eyed, blonde 17 yo stranded in Mexico, alone. Luckily, an old friend of the family got left behind also & they stayed 24 hrs in the airport. There was a whole lot of worrying goin on.
One year I went to Cancun with my girlfriend and my buddy. As usual we stayed in Tulum. After a week i had to take my girlfriend back to the airport. My buddy and I were staying another week. I turned in the car at the airport and just hitchiked back to Tulum, about 100 miles.
In a few minutes a big [funny auto censor] very very dark colored Cadillac pulled over. It was being driven by a * guy from Belize. Belize is the next country to the south, it is about 15 miles from Tulum. English is the language of Belize and this guy spoke perfect English. I noticed a cigar box on the seat of the car. He picked up the box and handed it to me and said ''Do you want a smoke?'' I opened the box, there were a dozen huge joints in there, the size of cigars.
In few miles this guy was going to cross an international border, maybe he knew the guards.
