Caught a Rat

I caught this guy in the basement yesterday. I live way out in the woods. These rats live in the woods like a normal wild animal, but in winter they want to move into the house. I have 9 electronic rat repellers in the basement and crawl soace and they have been working well for 2 years. I am guessing this rat was born deaf.

You dirty rat!
Looks like a vole. Not sure because the tail might be too long for a vole.
Rats have been proven to be super intelligent animals........it probably realized that your deterrent devices were no threat.
Allen, I've been looking for electronic repellers but didn't think they really worked. Sounds like you are happy with yours. What brand do you have. I'll try them out.
30 years ago when I lived in town I got new neighbors that rarely put their trash out for pick up, just piled the full bags in the backyard for a month at a time. In the 12 years I had lived there I never saw a single rat until the new people moved in. They didn't believe me about rats until I put a half dozen of the rat sized mousetraps near their trash pile. Caught three the first night and they started putting their trash out for pickup every week after that. It still took me about 3 months to trap the rest of the rats. Fortunately I never had one in the house or garage. By the way, hot dog chunks were the best bait and I never live trapped any, lethal traps worked just fine. Bob
I thought for a second there, that you opened your door, and there was a politician on your porch.....
The problem with that is there's always 3 on the other side who will let them out, so they never actually get caught.
This is one of my favorites. Uses two "C" batteries. I put one under the hood, I had those rats climbing into the car and building nests in the blower fan for heat a/c. This ran 'em off. Also opened the glove box and put one in the glove box, as the fan is right behind the glove box. Also use these in the woodshed and tool shed where there is no power. Very good rat repellers. Batteries good for 2 months.
Also I go to Amazon and buy the sectpod and the T3R. These plug in. Boys I am out in God's wilderness and a long long way from any dumpster, but these rodents come in from the forest and cause me lots of trouble. I laid in to the electronic repellers 2 years ago and it has been bye bye to the rats, until yesterday. But I think this rat was born deaf. If it happened to Helen Keller, it could happen to a wild animal.
Here is a review from Amazon for the battery powered repellers. [ I forgot to mention about all the car wiring the rats have chewed up]
5.0 out of 5 stars
Wish I'd Known About These Before!

I had regularly scheduled maintenance completed on my vehicle, went home, parked it for the night and the very next day the check engine light comes on in my car. Thought it was odd, so I take it back to the mechanic. Come to find out, something(s) had chewed through 10 wires, some of the plastic on the battery compartment, and even the insulation that surrounds the battery. $850 worth of damage in one night on a car that is driven EVERYDAY!
Immediately researched repellents. I purchased these based upon the overall positive reviews, price, and the fact that you get two in a pack. I am not certain if I can contribute it to the devices alone (I bought a liquid repellant, too), but all-in-all, the combination has left me completely satisfied. I did have some minor chewing on a portion of the plastic cap that covers the positive charge on the battery, but I repositioned one of the devices for more coverage with the strobing lights and have had no other damage since then I did not permanently mount these under the vehicle's hood. I just place them near the areas they have chewed (or are likely to chew) every night.
Ultimate test came over Christmas as the car sat unattended for six days. Came home to no damage and the batteries are still good.
Wish I'd known about these sooner. For $45.00, I could have saved myself an $850.00 headache.
Seldom do I endorse any product without total satisfaction and that is exactly where I am at with my electronic mouse trap.

Had a problem with a pack rat in one of my storage buildings I use for keeping ammo and reloading supplies. Found his nest and it was full of 20 gauge yellow shotgun shells and other miscellaneous reloading supplies. I would remove them daily, only to find he had replaced them the following night. It all came to an end after I installed the above listed trap.
Soda can for size reference.
For fear of getting one that consumed poison, I have not tried to eat them.
"full of 20 gauge yellow shotgun shells and other miscellaneous reloading supplies"
... "It all came to an end after I installed the above listed trap"...I'd have waited a bit longer to see if he brought you the shotgun too...
spyder the hole family is a bunch of rats
I thought someone might have got caught stealing firewood.
Round here that is a big mouse!
He's NOT alone ! 😆
we have rats frequently due to the chickens and all the chicken feed . the cats take care of the small ones but the ones that make it past the small stage, the cats seem to avoid . I just drop rat poison in the holes and a couple days there gone and I do kill them if I have a chance and have one cornered with what ever is handy . even shoot a few now and then
my wife who loves all animals once ( just once ) took a pitch fork to one in the chicken coup it started screaming 🤨 as I would if getting perforated with a pitch fork 😀 after that one time she felt bad 😥and just tells me if she sees one .
My photo is deceptive, I can see why susie was deceived. It is a real close up and it makes the rat look small. No, this guy is 9 inches long, and has a 9 inch tail. Easily the size of a full grown squirrel, this is a big, fat, rat.
clay I never heard of that rat execution device but I just bought one. You see, beyond the problems with the rats, I have beautiful, custom built log cabin, and $*&&!@#!!! squirrels come up and chew the overhangs of the dovetail notches. I have put hot pepper sauce on the notches, I have shot a few squirrels. Ever see what a .50 slug from a smokeless powder muzzleloader will do to a squirrel at 3,100 ft pounds? It isn't pretty.
But they keep coming back, although the electric rat repellers do keep them back for the most part. These squirrels want to eat my house. Squirrels have to constantly chew on something, to wear down their teeth. If they don't, the teeth will continue to grow and pretty soon, they won't be able to open their mouth. There is no nutritional value in white pine wood. They perch up on a dovetail notch, and chew on the notch directly above.
Time to electrocute some squirrels.
ps a 20 gauge shotgun and #8 shot are also rough on squirrels.
clays: how does this thing work? Do you have to put bait in it, or what?
My pick up is kept outside and I've had consent problems like this. The wire coatings are "soy bean" based and thus the draw from rodents! I think I may buy a few of these.
A friend of mine that I used to work with went on a hiking trip with his wife and several of their friends up in the Smoky mountains. It started raining so they got under one of the shelters that had been built along the trail. While they were sitting there a mouse came running into the shelter too and the women started screaming at the mouse and it just suddenly fell over dead and blood started running out of it's mouth. The screaming had scared the mouse so bad it had a heart attack. The guys were laughing and their wives were crying over their screaming that killed the mouse.
It would probably be too expensive to put screaming women in your basement to kill rats but it works. 😁
I like to watch the rat shooters on utube

What a picture that paints.
I wonder if those squirrels are exacting retribution. Didn't you have a bunch of walnut trees around your cabin that you cut down for firewood?
Here in the desert, we have a ton of pack rats. They will DESTROY any vehicle sitting overnight if they are around. The cheap and easy solution is to put LIGHTS under the car, or under the hood at a minimum.
I have LED rope lights going all the way around my RV also. That keeps them out. Cheap and easy!

Walnut trees for firewood ???
I realize at one time this was commonplace ... fence posts too.
Today the wood is a very pricey CA$H crop !
You cold have someone harvest the trees, clean up the mess and still pocket a tidy profit !
We place industrial glue boards (covered from the elements) around our grain bins and warehouses that has a peanut butter smell to attract rats, mice and wharf rats, sometimes we'll have 3-4 rats stuck on just 1 board, just dump them (board & rat) in a 5 gal. bucket with 3 gals.of water in it to drown them. Using the home size glue boards you're just piss'in in the wind trying to catch them.

This is the result of labor unions ... ! 🤣
might get the neighbors wondering also 😮
Yes, there is a small bait square in the rear of it. I use a small dab of peanut butter. They can't resist it.
OK I am gonna zap some squirrels.
Good Nature makes a good one, CO/2 powered.
I was hoping this was a post about Fauci.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
"RAT" that would be complementary🤨
hope you have good neighbors who won't complain about you "hunting" squirrells out of season....
Most States have a "had it coming law" when it comes to Vermon damaging your property.
I had field rats invade my chicken/goat pen.
Tried all kinds of things. The Good Nature traps worked well, but not good enough.
5 gallon bucket, 2/3rds full of water. Packaging foam peanuts floating on top, with chicken feed sprinkled on top.
Ramp built to the rim.
I'd catch a bunch of baby/youngsters.
The good Nature traps got a lot of adults.
Still wasn't keeping up.
Went nuclear with 3 different kinds of poison blocks, and daily watering down of the base, where their tunnels were, in January, in sub zero weather.
I won, for the time being. They moved out a year ago, and haven't been back, yet...
