At first, I thought the dude on stage left was holding a rifle.

They didn't need it! Don
I don't want to get into an arm wrestling match with the guy that swings that double handle sledge.
Good LORD.
And they were probably working for $0.25 a day.
Ever watch one get a way on Youtube, Wow and wow again.
Talking about hammers, not the banning type, I have been told when drilling rock for blasting in the old days one man held and turned the drilling steel and two fellows swung switch handled hammers to drive the steel.
Switch handles were limber to give more power to the blow.
Notice the numbers on the links, any ideas other than the diameter of the link steel?
If not rifle, what is it?
That's how many toes you lose when the link falls on your boot?
There were several of those anchor chains for the Titanic. They said the largest one weighed 15 and a half tons. They said all of them together plus their fittings weighed around 100 tons.
I read they were put on a wagon after manufacturing was complete and towed through the streets of Netherton by 20 Shire horses. Those are some big horses.
Somewhere I have a photo of my grandfather working in a machine shop. BIG open exposed belts running overhead etc. OSHA never would have approved😙
Here in this photo we have a chain holding up a chain.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
Correction: a chain holding up a chain, holding up a chain, holding up a chain.
What do you want to bet they were cutting apart links from that tiny little chain on the ground, to make the spreaders in the links of the BIG chain?
😁
It's a good bet there is yet another chain involved that is just out of view above.

5.75 inches.
There was a monster chain across Hudson River to Constitution Island to stop British ships across from West Point. Large section of it (13 links as I recall for original 13 colonies) on display at Trophy Point if over that way, Cannons opened up from Ft. Clinton when ships stopped by the chain. -----------------Ray
Re: Rock drilling- Man holding the star drill in the tongs was the Shaker. His job was to twist the star drill in between hammer blows so it did not lock up in the hole. You could have several hammer men (4 was usually max) and they would sing to stay in time. Shaker did not sing.
So what does a hammer have to do with an anchor chain? When dropping anchor, there is a possibility of losing control over the capstan- and the more chain out, the greater the weight on the capstan. Chain has paint marks every 15 fathoms (90 feet) known as a Shot. Get down to the end, two special marks- Warning Shot and Danger Shot. You have a real healthy young sailor with a sledge hammer standing at the emergency release, If the Warning Shot runs thru, he starts his swing- Danger shot, he whacks the release, ship loses anchor and chain- but does not get the guts ripped out of the chain locker. Seem to recall a weight of about 310 lbs per link on large chain.
Who cares how many chains
This anchor is in the same place as the Titanic anchor, bottom of the ocean.

Watch till the end.
I watched it to the BITTER END!
Know what I mean?
:-) Sadly, most today don't!
That little feller sitting on the floor looks to be only 12 years old.
It looks like pants didn't have belt loops back then.
Picture of that chain today where it rest on the ocean floor.
Great Photo !
Chain looks to be holding up to the ravages of salt water.
Needs a good cleaning
