Went to turn my bunch of loose horses into feed this morning and immediately noticed one missing.
l jumped on 4 whlr and ran to the top of the field and found my bred Percheron mare Rose,e piled up and dead.
she was fine last night at dark, her tracks in the indicate she walked away from the rest of the herd to the north, then turned west a 100 yds or so, then turned in her tracks to face East and piled up.
No sign of kicking or distress when she went down, just in her tracks.
she was 17, I’m thinking heart attack.
she was six months along carrying a Gypsy Vanner colt, so double loss.
I’m on the lines and Rose the one on my left, Piper is on my right, they had been together their entire life.

Sorry to hear of your double loss, maybe a complication with the pregnancy? Either way not a thing we like to have happen. Have had to put two out of my 3 horse down in the last five years only the youngest is left and he is mid-to-late 20s... Sorry Mule.
Oh man. Sorry for the loss. Percherons are amazing. I was blessed to be pulled through the elk refuge by a beautiful pair.
Sorry for your loss.
Sorry for your loss...beautiful animal
Damn, David ,,,,,,, a nice looking team. How many hands are they ??
Sad news Dave, sorry for your loss.
Sorry
Sorry for your loss. We had draft horses on the farm seems like a heart attack was pretty common in them. We had a matched team of Belgians Bert and Rex what gentle giants they were
Sorry for your loss. Dangit.
Sad to hear of you losing such a beauty. Condolences
Bill,
They both are scratching 17 hands and weighed in at 1850#.
they worked good on soft voice commands, really only needed the lines to step them up easy into the collars to start a load. I very much dislike watching some pulling teams hitting them hard in pulls, seen some nice horses get “Sweenyed”.

Thanks for the kind sentiments.

Sorry to hear the sad news.
such sad news
after that long I am sure they were truly part of the family
Sad news indeed, sorry for your loss.
Sorry to hear, Dave. How's Piper doin'?
It's been my experience that our animals never live long enough. So sorry for your loss.

Walking pretty slow, you can tell she misses her partner even though she has the other horses and mules around.

Sorry, I cannot get this to rotate.
Wife snapped this photo of the big bunch holding graveside services this morning where I buried my Rose.
i know it was just investigating the fresh dirt, but one likes to think they were saying their goodbyes.

David, here you go:
Oh! So sad! Somehow, I feel that all of those horses and mules in your picture are showing their grief for the lost friend. I know that my dog who was present when I buried his soul mate (another Golden Retriever) will always stop and sit at the grave site when we go by it.
