my dad had two old guns ( a 22 and a pump shotgun ) hanging on the wall as far back as I remember, and they were loaded none of us kids or relatives or even neighbor kids ever touched one . different times and respect was huge part of it

when I was about 8 or 9 dad bought a ithica 410 single shot off a co-worker for a whopping 8 dollars and I laid claim to it . he would some times buy a old ss shotgun and then make 5 or 6 dollars selling it at the time and to him that $5.00 profit was like getting a thousand now

any way a some of the kids, I grew up around there parents had at least one old gun mostly a old shotgun maybe a 22 in there house . I knew more did not have a gun than did I thought was odd but there choice maybe just money as it was scarce as hens teeth or there wifes choice I never ask

I bought both my sons a daisy BB gun very early on then bought them both a ruger 10-22 . , and made sure they knew the dangers and safe handling of a fire arm . my wifes family ( also southern ) all had grown up around guns her dad always had at least one leaned up by the door

so she ( my wife ) has never had a issue with me having or giving one to our kids

my training from my dad other than how to load and aim in a 5 minute course was well a little bit lacking in detail mostly don't shoot any one unless you have too 😁

My kids started shooting when they were old enough to understand and follow instructions. Same with Grandkids. All started hunting when strong enough to manipulate, carry, and aim a suitable firearm and mature enough to understand that they were taking an animal's life.

My first was a Crackshot 26 which I still have. A few years later I got a 3 shot Mossberg bolt shotgun.
