Just got this sweet old rifle in yesterday morning. First year of production with a great bore and an action that is just plain slick. It would be a fun project to work up some loads and see what the old girl is capable of.

A friend had a 300 Savage in a Savage 99 that I shot a lot 40 years ago. There isn't anything on this Continent that caliber/rifle couldn't handle. A 300 Savage will do anything a 308 will do.
The original beltless "short magnum".
The .300 Savage is a great round to play with ! I hive a Savage Mod. 99 in that caliber. Very accurate, in a bolt action, it's as accurate as a .308 Win, I rebarreled a Mauser 98 in .300 Sav.
The Mod. 99 is my favorite though ... butter slick and smooth with no recoil. 2,5 inch groups @ 100 yds. with iron sights and young eyes ! ... 1.5 inch in the 98.
150gr. slugs work best, IMO.
i have one of those, it is my favorite rifle in my "just have to have it" collection. i also have a Savage 99 but i think i like the 760 just a little better.
Don't try to "magnumize" it. It's a fine 250-yard deer-to-venison converter as is.
Neat old rifle in time a honored and once hugely popular chambering.
The .300 Sav. was a contender to replace the 30-06 when the military was looking to downsize. With 150gr bullets the .3oo can
nearly equal the .308 Win, which everyone knows got the nod in military trials.
It is a wonderful little 30 cal. round, full of potential and absolutely deadly on deer/human size game.
Accurate with little recoil ... you can't ask for more than that ! ... Love this ctg. 😍
Nice rifle. I have a 300 Savage in a model 99 and a Remington 722.Like both real well. I need an auction number.
Yea well it ain't no .243. But then it is so much better than a .270.
I believe the government felt that the longer neck of the 308 would give better bullet grip in full autos.
I saw a similar (or maybe the same) rifle for sale in western North Carolina near Asheville.Nice old rifle.
thank goodness it "aint no .243".
I have a Rem 81 in 300 Sav. Good shooting & accurate.
I never liked the 760 pump action rifle. I got one in 30-06 as a gift and traded it for a Winchester model 88 in 308. A lot of guys love these rifles, I'm just not one of them😔
Oakie, perhaps you didn't grow up with a "corn shucker" shotgun. Those of us who did probably prefer a pump to a lever rifle.
I bought my son a 760 for his first rifle. I didn't realize at the time it weighed 8 lbs.
