Winterfinally arrived in eastern NC. Sleet and freezing rain for the coastal areas. Inland , we are expecting 3 to 5 inches in my area . This will be on top of the sleet that fell for 3 hours prior to the snow . I realize to many of you that aint much snow . For us flatlands it us a gracious plenty .
cry Havoc and let slip the dogs of war.....

It's almost midnight and I am at my office here in Wilmington, N.C. I just went outside, it's 29 degrees and the stoop is covered with sleet. Great night to be inside.
Power is still on, which is a surprise. Generator was ready. Freezing rain till 9 last night and then it started sleet ,snowing. Still snowing , with about 3-4 inches on the deck. Snow or ice here very rare.
It's 2 am and snowing, 28 degrees outside.
Be safe all!
It's -3 here in NW CT
That is for sure. Here in WNC setting on 18* and froze back show and ice everywhere.
We got anywhere from 12 to 20 inches during the last event here in one county alone. Can you say black ice?
No precip in the near future but single digits predicted for next week.
Worst problem is the many ski resorts attracting the flatlanders from Ricci and Pulsarnc's area. I will go out on a limb and say they might agree, "those folks sure can't drive on slick roads". The long MLK weekend attracted them like flies on stink.
DOT could not do a very good job road clearing because of dodging stuck tourists with their go everywhere SUVs.
The company that does my grading also contracts snow removal for the DOT. His crew put two of his trucks off the road on their side but with no major damage. Tough plowing heavy snow and especially with white out conditions.
Most of the contractors use older high mileage trucks for snow removal and salt spreading, they plow and salt a day and then mechanic a day, at least. I told me last night, they were on salt duty, he and his crew were totally exhausted.
Somewhere I read or dreamed yesterday's ice/ winter warning was the first one issued for eastern NC in many years.
Balmy +16 here and just ready to walk out the door to spend the day ice fishing a derby with son, grandson, and granddaughter.
Mule
We got about 3 inches of snow on top of about 1 inch of sleet.
We had a winter ice storm here in 1968 . No power for two weeks .Dad hauled water from a naturally overflow spring and we cooked on a kerosene stove.
Well about 12 hours later... half of it is melted. Rest may last till tomorrow.
You guys went and jynxed me! All our power lines up here on the mountain are buried, and we had a nasty winter storm with 80mph winds and blizzard conditions you wouldn't believe. Then the power went out.
I was down the mountain, got the word from the ever-patient Ms. Nanuq that the power was out, and coming home it was impressive to see the mountainside completely dark, with a couple houses here and there lit up from generators.
I got home and pulled the generator outside, checked the gas and fired it up... plugged the house in, threw the big switch, and boom... it was just like nothing had happened.
I felt kinda bad having the place all lit up and toasty warm while everyone else suffered in the dark. So I baked a pizza and watched the Boston Bruins destroy the Winnipeg Jets in NHL action.

Here in Wis it is 4 degrees and dropping, but they forcasted 3 inches of fresh snow tonite. Thats a bummer.
Mmmmmmm that stuff is the best, crystals everywhere and it squeaks when you walk on it.
We got 6 or 7 inches here in Chesapeake, VA ... very close to an avalanche for this area. Everything came to a screeching halt.
Thaw and refreeze on roads, makes for treacherous driving. Most folks in this area have no experience with snow and ice.
got up to a balmy 44 today in the "banana belt" of western Montana, after an overnight low of 18. to be similar all week coming. January thaw i guess.
