222 with the right bullet choice will take most critters. That said depending on what your are hunting it may be better to have a more powerful set up. If a 222 is what you have, understand it's limits and go hunting.

When I was about 15YOA, I bought a Savage 340 in 222 Remington with a 4X Weaver scope. I deleted the front barrel mount, floated the barrel, and had myself a tack-driver. I hunted everything with it. Then I got into reloading and found that 50 grain Sierras chased by some 3031 powder consistently wanted to follow each other into the same hole at 100 yards. The 222 is still my all-time favorite, beats the heck out of 223 or 5.56.

Years ago we had older guy come to our deer camp every year.He was from Finland and used a well made .222.I cant remember the make of the rifle but it started with an R.I do remember that he killed one deer, with one shot every season and that was all he needed.

    hunting WHAT?

Regardless of what the earlier posters said, the .222 is considerably under powered for general medium game hunting ESPECIALLY when used by an inexperienced hunter.

In the hands of an accurate, knowledgeable shooter, it CAN ethically take deer sized game.

Right bullet and good shot selection. Understand the limits.

With some of todays top notch bullets, Burger or Barnes, a 222 will do the job if fired by an experienced shooter on small and medium game.
