ruger 77 rear peep sight ?

varianvarian Member Posts: 2,258 ✭✭✭✭

looking to buy a ruger 77 early model. it has a long ramp front sight installed and two screw holes near the rear right side of the receiver, no rear sight. looks like it was set up for a peep sight. looking at the williams sights they all look like they mount to left side of the receiver or can they b turned around and be mounted to the right side.

Is this Ruger one of the round receiver models, or the receiver with the more common integral scope mounts for Ruger rings? If it is the one with the integral mounts, then you can get a very nice receiver sight from NECG that mounts directly on the Ruger dovetail. I do not believe that the two screw holes in the right side of the receiver are factory, and were probably put there by a gunsmith.

Also, the front sight you describe as long sounds aftermarket. Ruger sights ( on the M77 RS models ) are a short, band style ramp sight.

yes i am sure the front sight is aftermarket thats why i described it as i did. i have one of those peeps on a No. 1, it is a very nicely made sight. i am also sure the holes in the receiver are aftermarket, i would like to find what sight they were drilled for. looks a lot like the proper hole spacing for a williams but all the williams i have seen look like they are made for the left side.

As Chris asked, is it a slab sided receiver or round? Many of the right side mounted ones are for military rifle upgrades.

Just went through a box but could only find one Redfield that looked like it could be used on either side. I can't put my hands on the main box at the moment.

Lyman made a receiver sight specifically for a m77 and it mounted on the left side.

I think I'm wrong. The one I was thinking of was for the ruger 44.

sorry not round top, integral scope bases. The williams i have seen pictures of look as if they would fit either side of the receiver. i guess i can call them and ask.
