Cold, Cold, Cold, Cold, and Cold.
Pass.

But trust me, our income taxes make up for it in Oregon.

Testify!
Oregon has a tax on cars bought from out of state.
Michigan sales tax is 6%. Groceries (food items) are Tax free except stuff that is preprepared in a deli.
Utah's sales tax is 7-something, with a premium in resort areas. The four pillars of Utah's economy are tourism, agriculture, mining, and high tech/medicine - in no particular order. We consistently run a surplus of state income, and every year the Legislature discusses removing the sales tax on food - but never do. This year, however, they just might; as well as cutting the income tax.
YET
Texas is 6.25 at the state level, but county and cities can add (and most do) up to an additional 2 percent so in 8 out of 10 cities in my county we pay 8.25 percent sales tax... oh and the two cities that don't add anything, don't have any stores I'm aware of...
They are going to get it somewhere
Don't forget US territories. (I think that there are 7-8.) I don't know where you would fire a gun in Guam or American Samoa, but they are US citizens with full Constitutional rights.
It looks to me like the company developing the tax software is charging the maximum possible tax for each state. If you are overcharged, the only thing that you can do is file a request for a refund with your state treasurer. Better keep good records.

Sales tax is about the only "fair" tax there is.
Sales tax is the best way to pay taxes, abolish any other type, form or fashion. No loop hole, no nothing.
Rich pay a fair share and poor their share to. Spend it, tax it, don't spend it, no taxes due.
I would even wager we would all pay way less than we do now.
Sales tax is all inclusive, however sale taxes hurts the poor, working poor, and lower income people.
The power to tax is the power to destroy.
Americans are greatly overtaxed considering city, county, state, and of course the federal government. Those who disagree are not paying taxes.
Low income, poor folks will pay a poor tax, can't be any simpler than that, you buy a Cadillac you pay a big tax share, you buy a Kia a small tax is paid. Who Benefits most from collected sales tax, low income and welfare recipients.
Lest we not count the fat cats getting rich in government positions.
Also if I remember correctly us working folks must work over half of the year to pay our unfair share taxes.
Taxes are more than just sales taxes.
Now don't get me started on mileages and personal property taxes! 😝
It is always smarter to tax consumption, than creation. If I didn't pay income tax on my paycheck, I'd be motivated to work longer hours and rake in the rewards. A sales tax only applies when we decide we want something new and shiny.
A sales tax disproportionately harms the poor, as compared to the rich. TO A POINT. All of us need very few things to live. Food, water. I make a big paycheck and I eat the same, or less, than the people here in town living off of Uncle Sam. We probably drink the same amount of water. Our basic needs are equal, and we're taxed the same on them. Beyond that is where the disproportion kicks in.
Every dollar that is taken from me, and given to another who won't work, is a sin. But for the people who honestly, truly, CANNOT work? It's up to me to take stock of the resources our good God has placed in my lap, and to honor the grace he has shown me, by being gracious to others. That is MY duty, not the government's.
Ohio does that too.
Joe
Washington has around 8.5%-10.5% sales tax depending where you live. Food is not taxed, unless it's prepared food such as in a restaurant. There is no income tax. Every few years there are rumblings of creating an income tax. Guess who supports an income tax? The uber rich Paul Allens and Bill Gates types. Ya know why? Because they have/can hire accounts and tax attorneys and will pay little to no tax. Right now if they buy something they have to pay sales tax just like I do. They don't like that.
IMO a national sales tax of 10%, and abolish the IRS.
Taxing only major wholesalers would prevent wasted time / work and insider trading schemes.
AGREE 100% HPD!
Here is my take on a national sales tax: The first Federal income tax was a mere 3% enacted after the Civil War. FICA was ratified into law in 1913. The rate was 1% for those earning up to 20K and graduated up to high of 7% for those earning over 500K. Politicians promised these rates were never going to increase. Presently the max rate today is 37%
VAT (Sales) taxes are popular in Europe. Germany started at around 5%. When I lived there it was 20%. Last I heard, the EU standardized the VAT at 21%
I like your idea of VAT tax only but for the tax to stay steady at 10%. Will never happen
