Good day for a drive and pics of a cupola pond
Took a drive today. The mother of a childhood friend of mine passed away on Monday. My friend has been having a hard time and not really wanting to get out of the house. I went to visit her and suggested a drive up to the national forest were my family deer hunts.
The weather was perfect to put the top down on the car. We had a nice visit, she got out of the house and she didn't have to deal with people.
The road upon which we camp is the dead end road in the attached article. The locals call it Gum Pond Road. Was surprised to see the forest service had done a controlled burn in the area. Some old stumps were still smoldering. No burning around the pond. The trees that grow in the pond are red maple, pin oak and Tupelo gum. The closest Tupelo gum to these are 40 miles away.
I have taken the grandsons here when the water had almost dried up. We were able to look up into the large hollow tree.
Controlled burn area.
The Cupola pond.
This hollow tree is over six feet across at the base. The hollow area is large enough that I can get inside.
A wide angle pic of the hollow tree.
This is a cluster of five trees that have grown together.
There is a path that leads down to the pond. A sign at the trailhead explains what it is. The sign is very faded. I took some pics of it but it is almost unreadable.
Comments
Saw this guy on the side of the highway on the drive up. Turned around and went back so friend could snap a pic. And no, he isn't going to be ok.
We used to duck in a flooded Cypress Swamp on southern Ill. Looks just like it!
Neat pictures
Very pretty. Nice of you to get her out. Alot doesn't have to be said, just her knowing that you are there for her. God bless you both!
