Got a line on one in .270 win. with a 3-9 Redfield "tv" view scope. Compared to what I see on the auction side, the price is right. The gun shows that it's been used, but mostly finish wear on the stock. I understand this model was dropped in favor of the model 700. Never heard anyone badmouth them, but wondering if there's anything I should watch out for.
Arrivederci gigi

Great rifles, and a nice period correct scope. Go for it, you won't regret it.
I don't have a 721 but I do have the 722 in a 300 savage. Same rifle but the 722 was in short action calibers. A plain no frills rifle that is well built and generally shoots well. I have been very happy with mine. I would definitely get that 270 if the price was right. I would love to have a 721 in 270 myself. According to any problems as I recall reading there may have been a common problem with maybe extractors breaking, can't really remember if this is what it is or not. Google is your friend on this or I'm sure some of the very knowledgeable people on here will chime in with good advice.
The 721 and 722 are good rifles. I have owned a few and still have a 722 with a 700 bolt.
Extractors were a small problem, but easily solved by replacing with an AR 15 extractor.(gunsmith required) Triggers in my opinion were better than the last 700 triggers. Just clean them and use Napa or lither fluid to lube, or LPS 1.
The 700 is just a 721 with more frills! The 721/722 is as "plain as an old tin pail" and they are great rifles. I have two .270's, a .30/06, and the .300 H&H. A few were made in .280 and .264 Winchester Magnum but I've never seen one in .280 and only one in .264. I am always on the look-out for 721's and 722's at gun shows. If I had seen your .270, I would no doubt own it; I am in love with the old Redfields, too. I have a 721 .270 that a great Gunsmith (I wish I knew him!) had converted to left hand and did a beautiful re-stocking. You may be interested to know that the 721 is a true "magnum length" action.
I sure appreciate the input folks. I can get the whole setup for about 1/2 of what I see on the auction side. I'll make sure it feeds and extracts first though. With the scope and rustic leather sling, I don't think I can get hurt.
Thanx
I am the current family curator of a 721 in 300 H&H
This is a rifle my Dad purchased when i was just a baby
Dad has killed elk , deer, kudo, Niala, and impala with it
I have killed elk and wildebeast with it
Son #1 elk, deer, kudo with it
Sone #2 has killed deer, Gemsbuck with it
We call it the "Meat Stick"
Hopefully I can get Dad to go deer hunting again this fall with it
Doug
Doug, I saw one that just sold on the auction side. The best rifles are those that have memories. If that gun could talk.
OK, I'm probably gonna pick it up tomorrow if my work schedule permits. Pretty excited about this old gun.
@sxsnuf If you want a period scope mount, I have a B&L Kaharski base marked 722.
I appreciate you thinking about me Toolman! I'd never even heard of these mounts before now, so I tried doing a little research. Sounds like they are 1 piece mounts? If so, I don't think the 722 mount would fit the 721 long action. It also seems that some Kaharski mounts command quite a premium.
