Help my older eyes

Ruger4meRuger4me Member, Moderator Posts: 3,804 ******

Hey folks, I've pretty much always just used iron sights, but my eyes ain't what they used to be. Looking for recommendations for types of sights for AR platform that won't cost more then the rifle build.

Thanks.

Bret

    1 of my AR's has a Bushnell TRS-25 on it about 100.00

Another has a cheaper 3x9 hunting scope about 125.00 A old Redhead which works just fine it's on the 350 Legend

The rest have Nikon Prostaffs mounted on them All were less than 250.00 when I bought them.

One of them will be getting a Sightmark Wraith Mini soon most likely the one that I'm building now.

Your eyes might not like a red dot either. If you have any astigmatism, the red dot will just look like a smear or a blurry red starburst.

I would consider a very low-power scope (e.g. 1.5 - 2.5x) with long eye relief (6 inch works great). I use these in my pistol-caliber lever guns and a couple of ARs, and they are very fast handling. I am especially fond of the “circle-x” reticle one I have. I think it’s a shotgun scope, so has thick lines….but I ain’t trying to shoot 400 yards, so works fine for me.

Holosun HS403C Red Dot sight. I have one on an AR and shooting steel plates at 50 yards is a hoot.

At what distances are you looking to shoot Bret?

  • grizgriz Member Posts: 425 ✭✭

I use 1.75 reading glasses at age 80. My distant vision is still 20-20. When I complained to my optometrist during my annual visit he said hold on just a minute and left the room. He was soon back with a pair of 1.0 reading glasses and said try these.

They work well allowing me to have the front sight in focus along with the target. They were a cheap fix for me while not forcing me to scope any of my iron sight rifles.

I fought the same issue for a while, and finally broke down and bought a Leupold Mark Ar 4x-12x

Where I was going with my first post you can put about anything you want on them most of the optics on mine came from other Rifles when I upgraded the optics on them

Primarily out to about 100 yards, usually closer @toad67 I just am starting to think that a red dot might be easier to use, but I really haven't had much experience with any types of optics.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone. PSA had a sig romeo msr on sale and another guys review seemed like it was a good one for the price.

try one of the cheap holographic sights, used to be in $20 dollar range, though I think they are now closer to $50, I say try the cheap ones in case you don't like it, I put one on my 870 12 ga few years back and it still holds true, it has 4 different " sights " dot, small cross, circle with dot in it and cross with dot in center in red or green. I use the circle with dot for shotgun, if you can put the squirrell in the circle the patter will get him. I also use one on my 357 lever action it has held up to close to 1000 rounds of 38's and few hundred 357's. If you like it you can allways buy a better quality one in future and use the cheap one on one of your rimfire rifles....
