"Not English Make" lend-lease?

I have a Stevens Model .22-.410 combo gun (rifle over shotgun) with Tenite furniture. In tiny (maybe 2-point?) type on the receiver near the hammer are stamped the words "NOT ENGLISH MAKE" and on the bottom of the receiver in larger (maybe 12-point?) is a stamped four-digit number. Does anyone know what this all means? I think "not English make" indicates a lend-lease gun sent to Britain in WWII; maybe the four-digit number was a way to track the gun. Also, it's rumored that some .22-.410s were assigned to air crews as survival weapons. l appreciate any thoughts you may have.

The only info I have is that about 15,000 mod 24 22/410 tenite combo guns were included in the E Series aircrew survival kits from 1942 - 1945. Bob
