There are a couple of possibilities. Show pictures.
Is there a "K" prefix on the serial number?
When you open the cylinder there is a model number above the 7272, just under the barrel on the frame, that should tell you the model number and will help identify it. Also what percentage of bluing is left on the frame and how deep is the turn line on the cylinder will help in the approximate valuation. After 1958 S & W put model numbers on their guns, if you cannot locate a model number than we will need pictures.
Model numbers didn't start till Sep. 1957 and my guess is this revolver is older than that.
