AK-74 5.45x39

jimdeerejimdeere Member, Moderator Posts: 26,159 ******

There's a member on the wanted forum looking for a particular gun in this caliber.

Question: Do any military or police units in the world use this caliber? It's similar to .223 Remington, maybe?

Apparently, the Russian military still uses that round, as do some former Soviet countries.

Many Ak savy people think that the 5.45x39 is the best round for the ak platform. Its funny when ammo got hard to find for it I thought about getting one. I figured that with ammo hard to find the price would go down. I was wrong again the price went higher on 5.45 AK's. I settled by getting an AK in 5.56 but that round doesn't function as reliably as the commie stuff does.

I have a 20 year old AK74 and about 20x 30 round magazines. I shot it some and found it was 'battle rifle accurate' at best with 55 or 60 grain bullets. With 70 grainers, many of the bullets hit sidewise @ 25 yards. I guess that's good enough if you're a really poor marksman any way.

The 5.45x39 V-Max ammo loaded by Hornady is pretty good stuff if shot from an AR 15. My older S&W logo 5.45 AR upper will hold it's own against a decent .223 at 400-500 yards. I have a small amount of RWS 'match grade' FMJ 5.45 ammo that I've been saving to test run in the new 5.45x39 'VooDoo' barreled upper I recently assembled.

Once upon a time I was told the Russians designed that round so a weapon could fire captured 5.56 ammo but we couldn't fire theirs. Anyone know if this is true?

    Wild Turkey, The 5.45 is shorter than a .223 (39mm vs 45mm) also the 5.45 uses a .2215 bullet.

Many countries in the world still use it. I had a couple or five, ok, but sticking with the 47 variant and of course the dreaded and hated AR -platform.

    That would be impossible.
