I have this shotgun but having troubles with it. When the gun is empty the bolt wont lock up when the action slide is forward. But when there is a shell in it then it will. Worked on alot of these and never had this issue. Thx

    Have you pulled the action arms and bolt to see if there's gunk built up?

    Sounds strange. When it is empty are you leaving the hammer cocked? That should lock the gun closed until it is fired or the action release button is pushed. Does the action release button function normally? When the action is closed all the way it should protrude out from its slot more than when the action is open. Bob

    A few things to double check;

    Is it clean and assl. correctly

    Are the action bars straight and equal? Not bent inward or outward.

    Are there any small burs on the action bars?

    Is the bolt block installed the correct way?

    Is the slide release straight and not bent?

    Is the barrel correct for that gun?

    Is the barrel seated all the way and tightened down?

    Good luck. Let us know what you find. @peedad

    I experienced several similar situations with 870's. On The first gun the recess in the barrel extension was built up with "gunk" and would not let the locking block fully engage consistently. On the second gun the forend tube nut was loose and the forearm would slide a little on the forend tube assembly keeping the locking block from fully engaging.

    Hope this helps.

    It may be the extractor is holding the bolt back unless there is a cartridge holding it in the correct position.
