Winchester 70 Super Grade stock Inletted sling studs?????

Okie743Okie743 Member Posts: 2,700 ✭✭✭✭

I bought a USED Winchester 70 Super Grade gunstock and the inletted sling swivels studs THAT ARE ON THE STOCK are .5 inches wide.

Standard sling swivels for all my other rifles open to a max of about .3 inches.

I searched around internet, Uncles Mikes, etc and cannot find any sling swivels wide enough to install onto a removable sling using these stock swivels??

Only way I know of right now for using this nice looking Super Grade stock with a sling is use like a REDNECK designed wire and attach a shoulder pad or permanently wire tie a sling to the stock?????

Anyone ever seen any sling swivels that will open up to 1/2 inch wide?

Wisners makes replacement Super Grade replacement studs that will fit standard swivels. Or the alternative is to keep your eye out for an original set. I have seen them come up for sale now and then and they are pricy. Bob

The pre64 swivels and bases were a lot wider than the normal bases that we have today and I know of no one currently making swivels that fit them. The replacement bases I referenced should match the inletting on the stock and have a narrower extension that fit today's swivels. Bob

I sensed that one coming. Notice that I give it a like and LOL

Custom gunsmithing, like I've seen on several of the old Mausers 98's. (so as to enhance the esthetic beauty of the firearm and up-grade it's value)

Yep, I have two dremel tools, several flat * files (some are horse shoe rasps) and big 9 inch welding grinder and a 4 inch welding grinder and cutting torch.

Just wondering if I should do the custom delicate grinding work while the swivels are still attached to the nice Walnut wood and maybe add some duct tape for protection and to the vise jaws?

I also have safety glasses and a large steel jawed 6 inch vise to hole the stock.

    Bobjudy.

Good info about the pre64 type.

This wood is not barrel in-letted for the pre64 Win 70 but apparently has the pre-64 type swivel bases on the wood. (it was purchased as a used stock)

Was lucky I found out before I was ready to hit the woods.

    Thanks for the good info

The Japanese made replica Winchester 52 sporter came with Super Grade type bases that had the "eye" part narrowed to accept Uncle Mikes, etc. swivels. Those bases would interchange with the ones on your stock. Maybe Brownells or Gun Parts might have them as 52 sporter parts. But please don't grind up the Super Grade bases--PLEASE!

No way I would grind on super grade bases.

They are really nice deep blue. (and just one slip with the big 9 inch high speed welding bead grinder stone would scratch them and possibly the really nice grain and checkering on the stock.

    Thanks for that info.

You might be able to keep a sawzall from jumping off them too much!

I had forgot about my sawzall jab saw. I have some really coarse cut blades about 10 inches long and 6 teeth per inch. It's variable speed. Might have to use 2 layers of duck tape for wood protection then go to the grinder. I have a 8 inch bench grinder but probably cannot do precise grinding with it.

Thanks for the tip about the sawzall.

Always nice that I know I can come here to the GB forums and get some good tips about most any kind of problem,

especially mental, mechanical, electrical and gunsmithing)

Just another reason I hang out here.

The base is for the super grade swivels. They cost about 50.00 each when found. But look at QEW98 military swivels. They will fit these bases. You would have to get them blued as they usually are flat colored. I might have some around.

I just changed the supergrade bases to the regular .308 width so as all my existing slings would fit and are the type that should be on this stock. I swap my slings around quite often from rifle to rifle so I also wanted a standard fit.

I noticed what you indicate that the hard to find pre-64 sling swivels for the 1/2 inch wide pre-64 type bases do not look very good and also expensive and some 1/2 inch wide opening were used on the military mausers GEW98 and I did not need the military look on this nice late model Win super Grade stock.

Thanks for the info and offer.

Find some Winchester sling hooks. Designed to allow quick removal of a sling for stalking. Saw some on ebay not too long ago. They were more common in the pre-64 times before the modern style, push-button style became common, and fit those wider studs.

The other style back then was a fixed loop the sling was installed on. They were not quick to take off or change.

Glad you got that done like you wanted. You can sell those bases for a pretty sum I bet.

No I did not call them about the PRE 64 swivels. I noticed that the pre 64 had pre 64 VINTAGE prices and I found a set of late model Super Grade bases within reason that my existing slings would fit.

I did call the Winchester toll free phone number awhile back with questions about their new RIFLES on their WEBSITE and got an immediate answer (no robot) and the gal said she could not answer my questions and immediately transferred me to a tech, no waiting time and he gave immediate precise answers.

Winchester has a really good customer service and have finally got their act together and I've seen some very accurate late model new rifles straight out of the box, very nice wood stocks, very precise inletting metal to wood fittament and good workmanship.
