The marlin 1895 1972 were Ballard rifled hence the B Infront of serial I had gun number BO00072
I have both and really haven't noticed much difference in either type in my 444 I think the micro groove one does shoot jacketed bullets better but haven't seen that much difference in cast bullets.

i have a number of microgroove barreled marlins and they all shoot very, very well, but i dont shoot cast bullets in them. i have no reason for not shooting cast bullets except i never felt a need to buy any.
