Turkey Poachers

A few years ago, I had a pair of little hand held CB radios. I used them for my brother for spotting trees for me to cut. He would sit on the porch with a radio and the binoculars, I would be down the mountain 400 feet

away, with the chain saw and a radio. He would spot for me as I cut trees that were blocking the view. The little radios had good sound quality but would only transmit 1/4 mile.

One morning in April, it was during turkey season, I went out on the porch, the little radio had 21 channels, but for some reason, I put it on Channel 4. And I said into the radio, trying to sound like a truck driver "Breaker Breaker, Good Buddy!" I figured nobody would hear, as the radio only would transmit 1/4 mile. Plus, I figured nobody used Channel 4 anyway. It was just a whimsical thing for me to say that on the radio.

In a minute, I got a response! Sounded like an older guy, and he said "Jimmy has you seen any gobblers?"

Obviously it was some guys using radios to illegally hunt turkeys. And they were probably trespassing on my land, given the limited range of the radio.

In a minute, there was a response, sounded like a young guy. And he said "Remember Daddy, we said to NEVER use the word "gobbler" or "turkey" on the radio."

Well, obviously it was a father/son team of poachers on my property. I decided to mess with them. I used my best official police voice, and I said on the radio "KQK474, this is Ranger One. Do you see them on the side of the mountain? You go on in, up top with the shotgun. I will head them off here on the road. Am radioing in for backup. Clear."

I bet the father/son poacher team were scrambling to get off my mountain.
