1911 to use as base for upgrades

I am getting more interested in parts, fitting, upgrading and the 1911. I have been thinking of buying a basic Tisas 1911 to use as a base for upgrades. I think its forged frame, slide and barrel are a quality starting point.
I plan on replacing most of the internals with Wilson Combat parts, and along the way learn more about the 1911.
I do work at a gun range with a full gun shop and armorers, for equipment and help if need be.
For about $400 how is the quality of the Tisas? I am familiar with sanding, polishing, tools, etc., so with some help is this idea doable? I don't just want to drop $1K+ in another 1911 (I have an R1), but be more hands on and learn along the way.
Thanks for your input

Back in the day the top 1911 smiths used a lot of Norincos as a base for custom jobs . Not sure what is popular now .
Essex frames were popular also.
I dont have a Tisas, but you are on the right track. The best way to learn is tear it down and do the work yourself.Sounds like you have some experienced help if you need it.Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
30+ years ago..........I recall the Springfield Armory forged/match frame as being the go-to basis for a project pistol.
I still have one or two. 😀
Thanks for the input. Since all I really want is the frame, slide and barrel, I took a look online for them. I may even get those by themselves and just put the whole gun together.
I want a finished frame and dont care about the FFL transfer, I see more of an issue milling out the rails than another 4473.
The drawback is more fitting, stacking tolerances in different manufacturers parts and I would need to ensure I got every single pin and part...
I took a look at Sarco and they look like milsurp kits. I see a lot of people picking up the Tisas, and am mainly concerned with quality steel and forging in their barrel, frame and slide.
Caspian is what a lot of custom guns are built on these days.
Caspian is top drawer but not cheap.
