Question for the Mods re: closed threads

bullshotbullshot Member Posts: 14,683 ✭✭✭✭

Since the 20 million threads are now closed, can the mods/admin just get rid of them and clean up some of bandwidth ?

The vast majority or threads and posts sit harmlessly in the archives. Over in Ask The experts were like to save them for reference purposes.

The last time an entire page of old threads was brought back was as a part of an attack on the boards by a forum member who felt that he had been cheated out of one thousand posts. He then decided to "earn back" his supposed missing posts back by dragging up old threads with a "Yes" or "That seems interesting" comment. CaptFun made short work of him.

In the recent case, a member who had been absent for two years returned, with fanfare, to the forum. As it turns out, during his absence from the forum, this member had done little or nothing, so he set his sights on responding to dozens of threads posted during his absence. Sadly, nothing new was learned from his contributions.

Luckily my co admin @montanajoe recognized what was going on and began locking the "zombie threads", otherwise no one would be able to access the first page!

As for deleting threads permanently; it is time consuming to permanently delete a thread or post. It is purposefully made difficult so that a record of the offended threat can be maintained for future reference. My co admin @montanajoe is a genuine detective.

I don't like to delete the threads in cases like this, it's not fair to the OP to have his thread deleted. 'Closing' the thread stops further posting on the thread, and allows it to re-sink back to, in this case, page 60. Since the thread was not deleted it remains in forum archive and can found through the search function. If a member has relevant info to contribute to a closed thread they may request a staff member to re-open it. (Will not happen 10 minutes after it was closed. Don't ask)

As far as increasing your post count with this sort of run of past threads, be aware, your post count CAN be taken to Zero with out being fully Banned.

I will be showing the Mods how to do this, next order of business. Play nice, proceed with caution.

Thank you guys for the detailed response (a lot going on behind the scenes evidently).

Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain
