This little mite was about to cross Sweetwater Rd. I carried him across to the other side.

Good job!
The old box turtle is what I call them. Harmless fellows who enjoyed the garden in my childhood. I always took them up to the edge of field next to some good forests and let them loose.
Well done, Allen. Little fella looks thankful!
Once I was driving down the road and noticed a turtle crossing in front of me. I had time to slow down and swerve to avoid hitting him.
There was another vehicle following me at quite some distance. I watched to see what would happen. That driver also swerved . . . in order to hit and kill the turtle.
Some people just aren't right.
Cute little buddy.
I happened to do the same today.
Came upon what I believed was a snapping turtle attempting a road crossing , I eased the floor mat of the car under him and got him to the other side and he was safe.
Went by 3 hours later and no sign of him.

Hope he Blew his tire on the Shell.

Life is slow for the box turtle. This one today is the first I have seen this year. In a few weeks, I will see one or two every day of the week. There is a tiny creek in the ditch along my dirt driveway, up here in the mountains, flow is about 2 tbsp a minute. In the hot months, I will see a turtle burrow into the bottom of this creek, water is 1/2 inch deep, and he will just bury his paws and part of the shell, and he will remain there for 2 or 3 days. He is in no hurry to go anywhere.
In November, the turtles hole up. I don't know where they go but are not seen again until late May or early June.
I don't know why in the world they nest so far from the water but they do. We live on a lake and I must pull 3 or 4 off the road a season! This AM a female wood duck and 8 newbies wondered across our drive.
We had one show up in the yard of our previous house every year for the better part of 15 years. The girls named him Fudge, and were always excited when Fudge made his appearance. We could recognize Fudge by the big chip out of his shell - probably from running afoul of someone's lawn mower.
not many around us . at least we very seldom see them
but more than few times on vacation while on back roads in the mountains we have pulled over and removed box turtles out of the highway just hope I put them on the side of the road they wanted 😁
not long after my wife and I marred ( 1979 ) we found a box turtle near here dads house . we brought it home and just let it roam the house . it would follow us ( well as best it could LOL ) if it heard us talking it would make its way into that room I don't remember what we called it but it did not seem to mind its new life style it was well fed and taken care of .after maybe two months or so we took it out to a woods close to where we got it and released it .
I'm proud of you ! Good Job !
...Good on you!!...
...Years ago when my daughter was about 6-7 yrs old...I had 4-5 box turtles Id picked up in Ok, Tx and Ark...they lived in an area about 100 sq/ft in the back yard...they got plenty of fresh water, shade/sun, veggies, locusts and snails...
...One winter day my daughter came in screaming "my turtles are gone!", I looked, and sure enough, they werent in the enclosure...spring came and I saw the ground moving in the enclosure, it was a turtle!...Seems they can dig down and hibernate in the winter...I didnt know that...
...Im pretty sure they were happy, because a BIG surprise came when there were a couple of baby turtles about the size of a nickle in the enclosure!..babies looked just like the grown ones, just tiny...years later as my daughter grew up, I turned them all loose in the woods...daughter got older and less interested, and let 'em go in the woods...
Seen a few but they were hidden deep in grass and just an accident. They must just live off whatever they find under deep cover until it is a little safer when bigger.
Here is the first turtle of the year on my driveway. There are 2 or 3 that hang out here on my 3/4 mile long steep driveway in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
I have found a few baby box turtles, sometimes I even found the shell they hatched from. Mostly under pines straw while raking some for the flower beds. Once I had one crawl up on my concrete walking stones after a HEAVY rain, guess he was trying not to drown. They are very hard to come by, and I've only encountered a double handful in my lifetime, brand new baby box turtles that is.
I've found babies in the pool from time to time. They're fairly strong swimmers - haven't had any get sucked into the skimmers to drown, but that may be just luck.
