sometimes it pays to talk to your neighbors........

was out for a walk the other day and saw a neighbor down the street out on porch. He is allways tinkering with a few riding mowers. I had just hit a stump up in the edge of the woods and my old deck had started scalping, figured I bent blade, but turned out I loosend the spindle. Simplicity doesn't make replacement spindles like all the other mowers, theirs split in top and bottom halves and each has a bearing, then shaft, about $250 for all pieces for new spindle. My mower is a late 80's model and only has a 38in deck, which is perfect for the old family cemetery I mow, I can get between all the headstones and it cuts down my trimming time.

anyway I was telling my neighbor about the spindle and I can't replace mine as the belt pully has pemantly fused/rusten on the shaft and I can't get the spindle split in half to replace anything. I asked him if he had a press and maybe could help me get it off. He looked at me and said he had an old deck in his building he thought was off a simplicity, long story short he had an almost new 38 inch deck just sitting collecting dust, hardly had the paint scratched off and still had all the warning stickers! He let me have it for $50. this should get me at least another 10 years out the old mower, then the yard and cemetery will be someone elses problem..
