A Good Snake

I've been giving credit to our outdoor cat (aka: the "Verminator") for the lack of vermin around our house. Then I saw a large black snake the other day. I found 3 skins when I checked the area. The longest being 4' 11". (The next 4' 5".) Hmmm, that could be a good sign.

...Black snake sounds like it could be one of our (Texas) egg eating Chicken Snakes...have no idea of their range...if youre within a mile of a stock tank or lake, could be a Cottenmouth maybe...but I think being almost 5', that would be a really long one...they get REALLY fat but not real long... Dale (HeDog) would know, sadly hes not here...one of the good guys that left the forums...
Based on your description, I'd say it's a rat snake or a king and IS a good sign, like you said. Only problem would be keeping it out of your eggs, if you have any.
King snakes are awesome, not only do they eat rats and such, but they also eat rattlesnakes!😁👍
Likely as the Toolman says it is a black rat snake. Related to the Texas form (egg eating chicken snake? Man that is imaginative!) 4- 5 feet is good sized but not a record. Almost big enough to take the cat. Which should not be outdoors killing things, song birds among the other vermin you don't like.
