Just what qualifies for this designation? Advantages if so qualifies? And in general just information about any firearm that might meet these qualifications. Thanks

Curio and Relics are all firearms over 50 years of age, as well as those deemed by the BATF to be unusual or of particular intertest to collectors- say a commemorative firearm.
The advantage is that with a Type 03 Curio and Relics FFL you can purchase directly from the seller (if he will ship to C&R FFL holders) without the need for using an FFL dealer for transfer. The cost of the C&R FFL is $90 for 3 years, so only you can decide if you will purchase enough qualifying firearms to make it worth it.
Trust me, I had to literally force myself to be that general with my answer! 😎
There is that one big IF in there. I have been turned down by some sellers over the years and have moved on. Others understand the licensing process and freely deal with us.
I feel I can bid a little more when I don't have to add transfer fees to the equation and that has made a difference. Buying anything 1972 and older hardly sounds like a relic anymore.
my maybe useless input why I just never applied to get one lucky for me I have know a FFL dealer for at least 30 + years and he is a great fellow , to get my FFL or C&R made little sense to keep books just for a few guns and shipping was not a issue before I had met him I had never had a gun shipped then maybe 6 to 8 years ago my youngest son got his FFL licenses and deals on here and local .
but I have heard a lot of the anti-gun and some of the political clowns are wanting to change the rules on C&R rules as too many semi auto and "Evel guns" are with in the 50 year old rule and they don't like that fact they want to some how revise to what gun and not age when it comes to buying with a C&R license
I agree that it can be frustrating that some sellers won't accept a C&R on legit items. I think that it might be the fact that you can't run a C&R FFL thru the ex-check system to verify that they're a legit license holder. JMO though.
The C&R license category came into being with a mind towards guns of the late 19th and early 20th century. As AR-15s and similar evil rifles fall within the C&R 50-year rule, you can bet C&R rules will change to exclude those guns otherwise banned by local or state law.
The AR-15 already has about 13 years of production that are now Curio or Relic.
More like 8. If you find a dealer who will do a 1964 SP1 on a C&R, please, let me know.
You are correct.
To add just a bit to the excellent answer from Mark Christian- I've held a C&R FFL since 1976.
A transfer fee might be $10. but I have also seen $100.
My LGS has a copy of my FFL on file. Find a gun I like, arm wrestle over price, hand him the money, shake hands, receipt is marked C&R FFL ON FILE and we are done with paperwork there at the shop.
Used to travel for work a LOT. Resident of VA, maybe going to KC- and looky looky- there is a gun show this weekend! And there is a lovely Colt Woodsman- for a decent price. I could buy it and take possession. The 03 FFL allows you to collect in any location. Normally you would be blocked because of different state of residence.
Places like Numrich and Brownells give you a 10% discount
Downside- you stay broke. Happy, but broke......
I believe that the cost of a C&R is $30 for 3 years.
Neal
Neal, you are right...you usually are. I stand corrected.
I realized I was old when I could get a C&R gun that was younger than I was.
LOL. Same here, Sam.
I can't say I'm thrilled at being classified as a relic.
Mark, clearly your a curio, not a relic.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
