My floating pool thermometer sometimes ends up in the surface skimmer so when I didn't see it I popped the cover off of the skimmer and started to reach for it when my brain said something wasn't right, I refocused and saw there was a Coral Snake coiled up on top of the thermometer, they are really beautiful creatures. This one was only a foot long and about as big around as a pencil, they only average about 18-24 inches as an adult.
Took him down to a nearby field and set him free. That's the fourth snake I've removed from the pool in about a year, two were Eastern Ground Snakes and one was a Ring Neck, all of them about the same size, I think because the drain holes in the pool cage won't allow anything larger to get in.

Instincts paid off big time.
Jesus walked on the water, and I would have, too.
I get mostly ring neck snakes, short-tailed shrews, box turtles, and jumping spiders, along with the obligatory frogs. A rat snake has lived in the railroad-tie retainer wall for the last several years. I named it Stubby, as it lost it's tail, somehow. I think it's there for the endless buffet of critters that don't make it to the skimmers.
Good on you to let it go
Don't have to worry about them around here but on vacation i have seen just two over the years down south
I don't kill snakes, any kind of snake, I leave them alone unless they are venomous, the venomous ones I catch and relocate to an area that is safe for them .... and people.
Snakes are extremely beneficial to the environment, helping to control rodents and insects and the like, this of course doesn't apply to the evasive Pythons that are slowly taking over the state.
Red on Yellow?
It's very rare when we see one around here. They have all been garter snakes. Freaks the wife out through. I just laugh at her and continue with what I was doing.
