Fram Oil Filters.

yoshmysteryoshmyster Member Posts: 21,879 ✭✭✭✭

Is there a shortage in your neck of the woods? I've been trying to get Fram Ultra XG3980 for over a year at Walmart. I haven't checked Autozone or O'reilly's.

Now that I have two cars that use the same filter I have an excuse to buy in bulk. Yes hording.

    Lol

I use Fram oil filters but if you look at professional reviews there junk and a danger to your engine

I always try and stay ahead on such items

Have maybe a dozen oil filters but I also have 7 cars / pickup trucks however i can only use the same filter model number on a couple of them

I normally have bought the special deals at auto zone xx amount of oil and get the filter free

I have never looked but check Amazon I have been buying a lot of items on there cheaper and right to my door

My tractor mechanic, who for years swore by Fram, said he attended a demonstration and was shocked at how badly the current Fram fared in comparison with several other brands. He now only uses Fram in his shop if the customer requests.

    Ebay baby!!!..........

The last filters I bought were for my 2008 4Runner.......a case of 10 factory DENSO filters, with crush washers, for $44.70(tax, title, and license included). No muss, no fuss....to my door.

BTW......I've also used Fram filters for decades(starting with my '68 GTO), with no problems. Still using them on my '92 VR-4.....although I do changes every 3000 miles.....the turbos, you know.

    Hope this helps.

I remember oil filter comparison tests where Napa Gold won (never even thought about them) and Fram Ultra/XG did okay.

tnranger - So I take it they're having issues? I need to see if they got sold/bought out?

Never thought about ebay. Just saw a six pack for cheap as Walmart (thanks 62vld2042). I get to stop buying K&N. That reminds me did you know they got two grades? A black or white cans.

My idiot brother retired from Fram working on the assembly line. He thought they were great filters until I cut a used one open for him.

Yoshmyster, all i know is what my mechanic told me. He's probably pushing 80 yo, and very set in his ways. If what he saw made him change his opinion, it must have been significant. Keep in mind he's a tractor mechanic, but I don't see why his information wouldn't apply to auto filters. BTW he has some NOS from the old days that he still swears by.

Have 6 vehicles and been using Fram filters for years with no problems. Just changed oil & filters on 4 of my vehicles. Having been a mech for years, I will tell you that yes oil filters will break down when they dont get replaced at factory recommended intervals.

Seen filter breakdown plenty of times when oil was changed but filters left untouched for years.

Also if your engine has a manifold or other leak allowing coolant to enter engine. Same with fuel getting in crank case.

I think that Fram 3980 also fits some Briggs &Stratton and Kohler mower engines. They were extinct around here last time I tried to find one.

I use Fram; I follow manufacturers' oil change recommendations; I've never had a problem with the engine's internals on any of my vehicles. Not saying they're the best, just that they've worked for me, are reasonable priced, and are readily available.

I have read all the experts on the net trash talk Fram oil filters. I have yet to see one engine failure due to a Fram oil filter that was changed at regular intervals. Whoever spent the $(most likely a competitor) to trash Fram did an EXCELLENT job because everyone "knows" they will kill your engine. LOL. Who here has 1st hand exp with damage from a Fram filter?!

On a side note, castrol traditional oil is HORRIBLE. It is the only one that claims to prevent sludge, but it soes exactly that! Rebuilt a motor (total rebuild), told owner to STOP using castrol. 12 months later came back with no one pressure. Dropped pan to change oil pump. Found the pickup tube strainer stopped completely with SLUDGE. Owner said he kept using castrol, wont make thay mistake again.

Synthetic MAY be ok, never tried it cause the conventional was horrible!

Don't do my own changes anymore, but never had any issues with fram filters, in the 60's and 70's it was pretty much all me and my friends used.

along the same lines the old non detergent motor oil was a nightmare on engines

when I was younger I helped out a uncle who did core buying and selling ( cores are parts stripped down to be rebuild and refurbished by larger company's from starters to engines transmissions well just about every part back then any way could be remanufactured )

I took apart countless engines that had used the old style oil most had just a small hole left for the oil to pass thru they left no doubt about why the engine failed , some were completely closed off if you never delt with it think of poring hot wax into a engine and let set .

Fram is having issues getting toilet paper in and from CHINA to install inside their filters

  • Ditch-RunnerDitch-Runner Member Posts: 25,233 ✭✭✭✭

some what close in a way

I remember aftermarket companys that sold oil filters ( canaster ) that used toilet paper you just replaced the roll when you changed the oil ( my old 8n ford uses a canaster filter housing just holds the filter )

I would guess there ( toilet paper filters )still being made and sold .

at one time may have been a cheap way to go but the cost of TP today not so much LOL

Used fram filters in everything up until about 10 years ago . Never had an oil related issue in any of the tractors or trucks on the farm . Now Quaker state oil is another issue .Pure junk and gums up an engine in a hurry .

cry Havoc and let slip  the dogs of war.....

My dad was a die hard quaker state oil fan my uncles both decent mechanics and spent ther life's around cars finely convinced him stop using that crap like you said it would cause that thick sludge that plugged up engines

No FRAM filters here for the past couple of decades. WIX(or other branded WIX) or John Deere OEM
