The tower is (of course) the core of an ancient volcano. Some basalt cools in an unusual way, leaving hexagonal columns. This is an example of such. What we see now was once over a mile deep in the ground, all of which has now blown away by the wind. The West is covered with lava fields and ash deposits from volcanoes including Yellowstone and others along the NW coast. Every Western state has extinct volcanoes - plus many that are technically still active or only dormant.
Snickering at the translation of "Tetons" is cute. There are or were some much bawdier place names in the West. One near here in Utah is a small peak just north of where the transcontinental railroad originally ran. Probably named after one of the many bar girls who "entertained" rowdy railroad workers, the unmistakably shaped rock used to be known as "Mollie's Nipple."
Maps used to but no longer carry that evocative nomenclature.
I'm 61 years young and our great nation still amazes me with the diversity of land, climate, flora and fauna. I would love to see a little bit of all of it. Alas, I might never, yet I will try.
I recommend staying away. Hawaii is a liberal hell hole.
Some will die in hot pursuit
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
my oldest son has been many times and has taken countless super nice photos he refuses to post any due to copy right issues ? and keeps telling us you need to go I will take care of the animals and house for you now go while you can . in the past it was a matter of vacation time , I am retired so maybe next year when my wife retires, we can finally go with out the worry of time limits . I dont see a lot of walking or hiking like I would have liked to do but still at least get to go

Maybe you will make Tulsa?
That is truly a great photo of Devils tower. I have spent several days there watching guys climb that thing. Way beyond my climbing skills.
Thank you. We hiked the trails around it but no climbing for us

Beautiful pics😊, I THINK there is room on the left for Joey.
@austin, how were the "crowds" there at Rushmore? and rooms available?
The trifecta.

There have been some spicy names!
I can remember looking at a topo map of Sherman County, OR years ago and seeing a ridge called N*****r Ridge.
The story was that a black fella passing through ran afoul of some of the locals and was hung in the only tree on that ridge.
Dos Cabezas Arizona was known as Dos Chichas until statehood.
We have this mountain here in Madison County North Carolina. It was named prior to the release of Deliverance.
BADLANDS
A few taken with the phone of the Badlands

We are right there with you.. Looking at possibly going to Hawaii next year for our 35 wedding anniversary
Kauaii is beautiful. My wife and I were married there. Much more laid back than Maui.
There are only two decent things about Honolulu: the Iolani Palace and Pearl Harbor
I would humbly add one more.......The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (The National Punchbowl Crater Cemetery).
Long ago, my new wife and I visited Ernie Pyle's grave there..........a very serene place.
I most humbly apologize for forgetting PunchBowl.
If we go to Hawaii next year those two places are musts on our agenda

It is, but every American should go to Pearl Harbor and the Punchbowl. Once is probably enough, but that once will be intense.
I have always wanted to go
