WASHINGTON (WJLA) — D.C. Library’s Public Safety Director Douglas Morency submitted his resignation following the Aug. 4 fatal shooting of a library special police officer during an ASP baton training session.
A spokesperson for the library told WJLA that Morency submitted his request for resignation within hours of the shooting.
"Douglas Morency submitted his resignation on Aug. 4. The Library received the resignation letter that night. His last day will be Aug. 18. Mr. Morency's resignation letter is a personnel document. Therefore, it is not public," library media relations manager George Williams said.
A retired Metropolitan Police Department lieutenant was arrested and charged one day after the shooting took place.
Special police officer, Maurica Manyan, 25, was shot during the training session at Anacostia Library conducted by the retired MPD officer, police said.
Officers were called to the library for the reported shooting a little after 3:30 p.m., officials said. When officers entered the library, they found Manyan unconscious and with a gunshot wound.
An investigation revealed that retired MPD Lieutenant Jesse Porter, 58, was providing the training as a professional instructor for a room full of library special police officers. Police said during the training, Porter fired a shot from a gun and struck Manyan.
Court documents state that the first officer on the scene said Porter said something to the effect of, "I thought I had my training gun. Why did I do this? Is she OK?"

Don't worry, Porter. The IRS will hire you.
Library police? Seriously?
That is a sad story. How about using non firing guns inside for teaching.
,,,RIP officer Manyan...
..."Library police? Seriously?" ...
...Security cams had caught Sandy Berger scoping out the library several times and the police were just being cautious...
It's all good.................no charges...............but let's TRUMP up some charges on TRUMP
I really don't care.
When the left.............which has no understanding of guns or gun handling/training/protocol.......try to employ neophytes.............they get results that they don't expect. Then they declare a "training mis-hap".
Every person involved in that "exercise" should be immediately terminated. But they won't be. I hope that the retard that took the shot lives in shame and guilt for the rest of his liberal life.
Armed library police? Licensed to kill? If you are more than a week late returning the book, do they get to employ their "00" rating, and shoot you?
87,000 new IRS agents coming your way.............armed accountants
When I was young the library was a very dangerous place to be, I would never go unless I was with at least four others, and we we’re ready for action the moment we went though the door.
The head librarian I remember use to keep her model 1911 right out on the top of her desk cocked and locked, and her back up weapon on her ankle.
Friend of mine had an over due book once, he spent six month in the hospital after the librarians got though with him.
Where is the orange or red Glock training pistols. My 13 y/o granddaughter most likely has more experience than the "trainer".
That sounds like a great cushy govt. job with a nice pension. Chief of DC Library Police.
"Chief, we got a 13 year old punk who made a one inch rip on page 87 of his library book. We are grilling him but we think he did it on purpose. We got him in cuffs, sir!"
"Book em, Dan-o."
