the smallest bullet loaded in the largest casing? Most extreme 'neck down'.

Joe, a great question. Not my Forte. This should be very, very interesting.---------Ray
50 BMG necked down to .22 caliber.
LOL! I think the bullet would simply go 'POOF' once it left the barrel!
There have been several 22 and even 17 cals based on the 50 bmg case. I believe they are all just for show and have never been fired. The flame cutting would kind of limit your barrel life to one or two shots and the pressure would be enormous -think pipe bomb! If your barrel doesn't blow then the bolt probably would.
While not a small caliber, I believe McMillan actually produce a 50 cal based on the 20mm Vulcan cannon round. If I remember it was quite a bit faster than the 50 bmg and was meant for HEAVY bench guns for long range competition. Bob
The first that comes to mind, although I do recall a 40mm grenade launcher case necked down to .22, but can't seem to find that one.
There was a rifle built to shoot it 378 weatherby necked down to 22
Whoa,,,now we're talking
Lot of guys had a lot of time on their hands.
I have heard the old guys talk about rounds that had more powder than hole.
I would think it would be wise to use a barrel with a lot slower twist than 10 inches, and to use a gradual shoulder on the case instead of a sharp one, in order to reduce pressure.
I remember finding a custom bullet maker online a few years ago, selling 20 grain .224" bullets. Didn't bookmark it then, so of course I can't find it now. Really wanted to toss a few of them across the chronograph out of my .220 Swift, to see if it would open a black hole under the screens.😜
Working on a 30mm GAU-8 case necked down to a chinchilla hair. The projectile seems to exceed the speed of light, and arrive before you fire it..........
A gunsmith friend of mine used to have what he called the .30-40 Mooner. It was a 40mm Bofors anti-aircraft casing necked down to .30-caliber and he told gullible gun show gawkers it was for shooting at the moon.
I think the barrel would go poof Neo. Put you right into the Matrix.
