Creating UPS label problems

I'm shipping a rifle for repairs, sending it to an FFL. I wanted to save some time before taking it to the UPS customer center, so I tried to create a ups label using their online system. I got to the part where it asks what's in the package. I listed, firearm. A message popped up saying that I need to remove the restricted item. Is this their way of telling me that I can't print a label, but have to let the UPS guy at the counter do it?

Sounds like a question for UPS.
Can't ship it UPS unless you are an FFL and go to a hub is my understanding. Ship it USPS priority w/ signature confirmation and be done with it.
GrassHopper, is this a new policy? Here is what they say on their website: UPS accepts packages containing firearms (as defined by Title 18, Chapter 44, and Title 26, Chapter 53 of the United States Code) for shipment only in the following cases:
The person I'm sending it to is a licensed dealer, so that falls under their criteria of individual to a licensed dealer. I may take your advice and go the USPS route.
It's kind of a weird deal. The franchised outlets have the choice of whether they want to accept a firearm or not, that's what I was told anyway, and you must go to a hub store. The reason you can't print one may be that you don't put one of them in a bind.
Ha ha, I think you are right. The hubs seem to be making it up as they go. If they give that kind of problem with printing the label, I'm not sure I want to deal any further with them. Thanks to everyone for your wisdom.
I have used USPS several times. Just make sure you insure it like it was Grandad's "ol' reliable"!
Shipping can be a PITA. They opened up a new UPS hub store closer to me a year or so ago and told me that they weren't able to ship ammo. I called the other hub store that I used to use and got a Manager on the phone. I then had that Manager speak to the one who told me I couldn't ship the ammo on my phone, well, things got worked out pretty quickly.
Ups may require a copy of the receivers FFL or some such bonafides of the receiver in order to ship.
Ask for a supervisor right from the get go and get a name.
Walked in and shipped a handgun Fedex several years ago right over their counter at the airport and they required a copy of the receivers FFL at that time.
My hub won't ship it from an individual and I said fine, USPS it is. Both have there issues but a long gun at my USPS office is not an issue.

You've talked me into it, I'm going with USPS, which is a little cheaper and will also save me a 40 min drive. Can I print a label before going to the counter or is there some rule that they have to do it? Also, I will send it priority, registered, with adult signature. I will bring with me a copy of the FFL's license and will expect to show them it's not loaded. Did I forget anything?
Seems like UPS stores in different regions make up their own rules. I'm an FFL and ship all of my long guns through UPS and only once many years ago did the UPS store ask what I was shipping. The manager of that store promptly told that person not to ask that question in the future. Some shipping insurance options will ask what you are shipping for insurance purposes such as "1 firearm", but not all ask that. Even then it should not block you from shipping. Never has a problem with printing a UPS shipping label through their website and I don't have to declare myself as being an FFL. One option would be to use Gunbroker's shipping service to print your label through USPS as that can be less expensive as compared to shipping directly using the USPS online shipping service. Gunbroker does provide a small discount on shipping and insurance both of which are outrageous right now. Yet another option would be to get the firearm repair shop to email you a preprinted shipping label and then have then add that cost onto your repair bill. Some might do that and others might not be so trusting. That is how warranty repairs by the manufacturer are typically handled and they do that for you with a phone call to customer service.
