I finally saw one !!!!!!.............

William81William81 Member Posts: 25,342 ✭✭✭✭

About 5 years ago the WallyWorld in a nearby town put in one of those Electric Car charging centers...five spots set up and ready to go...

This morning on my way home from PT, I stopped by to pick up a few things. LOW AND BEHOLD, I watched a little car pull in and hook up. This was the first time I have ever seen the thing used in all these years....

I know it is not the first usage though. A few months the end charger had been hit and knocked over...😮

So ..... They provide an electric charging station. Does the driver pay for this charge or is it free?

I remember the first time I saw one I was all excited 😈

as for the charging stations I have not even loooked but I am sure there around and I also wonder if they use a CC payment I doubt if the city or local business pays for the charging

Free you ask?? Heck! You can't even get air for your tires free anymore!

  • kannoneerkannoneer Member Posts: 3,393 ✭✭✭✭

A supermarket 35 miles away put one in 3 or 4 years ago. I think there are 3 charging posts or whatever you call them. I have never seen it in use. But some day there will be a waiting line, I'm sure.

AEYRCO convenience store 40 miles away has a 'charging kiosk'. Right next to the Micky D eatery so the millennials can go there and use the 'wi-fi' while they wait 2-3 hours for a 'fill up'. Just stick your CC in the slot and get 'powered up' but you'd better be finding the next place for a re-charge since it might be quite some distance.

Here in Western NC, Ingles is a major grocery retailer. They have installed charging stations that are free. Sunday wife and I went on a motorcycle ride in North Ga mtns. She wanted to stop at a winery and do some tasting. As I pulled into the parking area I saw two charging stations. I walked over to them just to look and they have slots for credit cards to activate. Been a long time since I was at a winery tasting room but wife order a quad sampler. I thought they were free, nope, $21 for samples.

There is a card reader on it similar to a gas pump….so not free, if it was all the little hipsters from the nearby college town would be lined up!

gotta wonder when the homeless will pitch a tent next to one for the free electric...........

At some of our high-end yuppie duppie shopping centers, there are Tesla-specific charging stations. They are always in use. I rarely see an empty slot. Teslas around here seem to be increasingly common.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

See some dotted around here and there . Have not seen one in use and no idea if paid or free

I just really hope they have some darn good ground fault set ups on these!😲

Rocky, where was this. I have never seen a car at one in Terre Haute, IN.

  • allen griggsallen griggs Member Posts: 35,619 ✭✭✭✭

Teslas are connected to headquarters via the computer which dominates the dashboard of the car. When a person charges up the Tesla, he has to pay, but does not use a credit card there. All the information is sent to HQ via the computer and you get the bill monthly.

It isn't free to charge a Tesla, but it is cheap.

That computer is one reason you don't want to steal a Tesla. HQ knows exactly where that car is 24/7

This is in Utah. There's a huge condo and shopping center between Ogden and Salt Lake City.

I can hardly take a drive around Ogden lately without seeing at least one Tesla. There are more of them than Land Rovers, Mini Coopers, or Jaguars - all of which have dealerships here.

At the local senior center, there is a bank of 3 EV chargers arranged close to the main entrance similar to the reserved handicapped parking spots. Now remember that this is in a major front range Colorado city, that has in effect become part of southern California. Most of what goes on inside the building is VERY left wing oriented. In going there several times a month, for several years, I have yet to see an EV parked there getting charged.

  • hillbillehillbille Member Posts: 14,393 ✭✭✭✭

can they plug them little carts they ride in to the EV charger????????

  • Rocky RaabRocky Raab Member Posts: 14,433 ✭✭✭✭

It is possible that few people use those "convenience" chargers simply because the price to use them is outrageous.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

    ......or, perhaps will be......

Only question.......how soon, and how much???

Beats me. I've never wandered over to read the instructions on one. It is also likely that the Tesla-specific ones have different prices than the "generic" charging stations. They don't call them "charging stations" for no reason, you know.

Edit: I just looked it up. The average cost to charge an EV at home runs about $0.12/KwH. Public charging stations run several times that at $0.31 to $0.43/KwH. Tesla-only stations are indeed different as well, but vary widely.

Some public stations charge as much as $0.35 per MINUTE! You can now buy memberships at added monthly rates to get slightly cheaper juice. Pay $8/mo or so and get reduced rates at the charger. Companies have figured out many ways to profit from all this.

And, wait for it, Uncle Sam will figure out a way to do a wheel or mileage tax to make up for fuel tax loss.

  • tomh.tomh. Member Posts: 3,843 ✭✭✭✭

Yep. By 2030, the parking lot at the market will look like the drive in.

I know you old farts will understand. 😉

Hyvee in Sioux Falls has charging stations but I have never seen them used. I park there because they are always open.

I did see a Tesla getting charged in Oacoma SD by Al's Oasis. First electric care I have ever seen getting charged.

They get about 100 miles per charge in the winter so not very popular here.

...Okay...people run out of gas, someone comes along with a gas can, or AAA brings you gas...WTH do you do if your battery runs dead, especially if it happens in the boonies?...not talking about a hybrid...

  • Rocky RaabRocky Raab Member Posts: 14,433 ✭✭✭✭

You call AAA, and they tow you to a charging station, probably.

I saw a picture of exactly that.......on the board or elsewhere, some time ago.

EV was on a flatbed wrecker......backed up to a charging station.

Bottom line.....not ready for prime time. Probably won't be......in our lifetime.

    Just some $0.02........

  • pulsarncpulsarnc Member Posts: 6,492 ✭✭✭✭

I have seen pics of tow/ rescue truck pulling large generator on a trailer hooked up to a dead ev .

Yep yep---and what if you're hauling cattle in a 20-ft cattle trailer like I do 60 miles to market and would have to use an electric pickup?? AAA wouldn't even bother to answer my call. .

For city slickers that drive a few miles a day --that's great, but it won't work in agriculture at all..... F-250 diesel with 6.7 L engine pulls loaded trailer just fine......... And I'm not even going to comment on an electric tractor. Eventually we may have to put a windmill or solar panels on ag vehicles. What a joke....

I suppose reactions to this are similar to folks who first had to pay for long distance phone calling.
