    originally boiled linseed oil..........1 coat a day (wipe off) for a week, 1 coat a week for a month, 1 coat a year......forever

    My freind finished a new M1 stock with Tung Oil and it came out beautiful. Use light coats and dry between coats. A fast job could be done with Spar Varnish but you would have to dull the sheen to make it look original. Lin-Speed and Tru-Oil have been the go-to oil finish since the 1960's. It also would have to be dulled unless you want a shiny finish. It is fast and easy. As stated above, linseed oil is the original finish. It is easy but takes a little time.

    I like 3-4 coats of Formby's tung oil. Rub with 0000 steel wool between coats & after the last coat.

    Use in a well ventilated area, wear vinyl gloves.
