The US aluminum industry has already been decimated by energy costs.
Only 30 years we were producing 30% of the world's primary aluminum. We now have only 3 or 4 smelters operating, all 50+ years old and no new production potential in sight. One would assume that the thinking is we will never have an extended war where production matters. If it is not in the stockpile at the start of the conflict, there is very little opportunity to build up for war like we did in the 2 world wars, and to a lessor extent, Vietnam.
