It’s a S&W .38 special, 1 7/8” barrel, 5 screw, double action. Serial #34870
I called S&W and a youngster was unsure but said it was probably made between 1917 and 1940 ,,,,,, lol. 😉
And yes, I entered the extension number for the gentleman listed in the S&W DOM sticky, to no avail.
This was carried by a LEO Detective(deceased) as a backup gun in his ankle holster.
Any help appreciated ,,,,,,,,,,

Sounds like it might be a "J" frame (models 36, 37, 38, 49, 50) made around 1954.
It is a ‘J’ frame but pre 36 ,,,,, definitely made before ‘54.
According to the SCoSW#4, the 38 Chiefs Special "Pre-Model 36" serial number range was 1 to 786544 numbered in an original series, produced 1950-1957, then continued as the model 36 until 1999. Serial number ranges were:
1950-1
1952-7369-21342
1953-28916
1955-55050-75000
The J frame series started to have a serial number with a J prefix started around 1969. 5 Screw models were up until 55 or so. S&W was known for making frames before they ever were manufactured/shipped. Why do you think it's pre '54?
