Tire Speed Ratings - Do you Stick to Them?

Looking at all-terrain tires for my van. Specs call for “S” rated tires (112 mph). Tires I’m eyeing are “R” (106 mph). Think that makes any real difference safety-wise on a vehicle that never goes north of 75mph or so?
Comments
All of my vehicles plus me are too old to drive very fast.
The tires on my airplane are rated for 120 mph. They need to be because I touch down at between 90 and 100.
The tires on my Harley are rated for much faster than I am ever going to run it.
Unless you are down on the border and are smuggling illegals and are being chased, your van will likely never exceed 80.
What Merlin said.
Hard to imagine it would make any difference, beside the safety factor being higher than the rated mph.
Just don't mix them.
If you're on I 85 between Spartanburg and Greenville, SC, and you're not doing 80mph, you're going to get run over.
Nope.
When was the last time you drove 106 or 112? If you never go over 80-90 then rated for 106 is overkill. They rate the tires needed based on the capability of the vehicle for legal reasons. If you don't plan to drive 110, then get the "R" rated tires. Even those will hold up for a short period of speeds over 107.
My old 2008 KIA Sportage would probably disintegrate if I punched it over 100!
The tires would be the only thing left to identify!
(Y ) in excess of 186 MHP for the C8, although I highly doubt I will ever drive it that fast.

So those still wouldn't work on the 188 mph Yugo!
I only look at the load rating since neither my vehicles or myself has any business going over 70mph.
In Excess of 188. Doesn't say what the max is ??
they would with synthetic, but not with conventional ..............
The old rayon tires blew apart at 75, not for the Yugo.

...and once again, we have taken a left turn into Sillyville, leaving the original topic sitting by the side of the road with flat tires.
It’s what we do best!
And we're damn good at it!
Well, since we can’t come to a clear consensus, I think I’d better just go with a nice practical set of tires for the van. You know, something like these…….
I think they’ll do nice on the highway. 😂
Don’t ferget yer ear plugs!
You are good to go
we used to use aircraft tires on tractors that read do not exceed 225 MPH when cutting right-of-ways
I would tell the new operators to read on the tires and never exceed speed ratings lol
Its not even a consideration of mine.
I don't know what the tires are rated for, but I got my wife's Buick Encore up to 103 last week while passing a lane hog doing 65 in the left lane. Darn quick for a 4-banger!
