Tesla Auto Fires after Hurricane?

Well It's not hard to see saltwater mixing up with high voltage would cause some big hot fires in a battery feed system! Floods and electricity don't mix well even in fresh water much less in saltwater! Where is The electrical engineer in this process? Elon is an idiot and he now wants 30 rocket engines to fire off to go to Mars full of rocket fuel?😁

The storm caused flooding and destruction across the state, and fire officials say they are still seeing its impact with EV batteries catching fire after saltwater damage. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is aware of multiple fires in Tesla vehicles, the agency said in a letter sent Friday (Oct 14) to a Florida official and obtained by Bloomberg Government.

That's too easy! Petrol Auto's don't catch on fire when flooded, not enough juice (amps) to pull it off. Elon makes and sells Electrical auto's he does not repair them. I had a Isuzu diesel pickup that went through a flood up to the intake and it still ran and All I did was pull out the carpet to dry out. I doubt a electrical car could do that!

Electrical Auto's has two bad problem, Floods and if the electrical grid goes down no fuel! Musk must had know his Auto's had these problems before hand or he was very dumb and didn't care.Take your pick.

Just how old was your Isuzu truck? I am guessing that it did not have all of the electronics that modern vehicles have, both ICE and EV. Mike was correct about the damage a flood will do to both types of vehicles. Between the sensors, wiring and the computers that basically run all of the vehicles today, a flood damaged vehicle would cost way more to repair than it is worth. That's a far cry from my older vehicles where the term electronics meant it had an FM radio.

Mike also mentioned the drawbacks of catastrophic battery fires. In the articles I read it occurred in all brands of EV's that were caught in the flood, so I am not sure why you are singling out Tesla. Is it perhaps because he is an extremely successful business man giving the, in my opinion, misguided public what they want? That's capitalism. I have said numerous times on here that I am not a proponent of EV's and even made mention on one of your posts about all the reasons why. So if you are just pointing out EV problems, fine I agree with you. I am not much of a Musk fan but pointing the finger at just him for an industry wide problem ain't kosher. Bob

He is a poster boy for being a Genius and if he is a leader in innovations then he lacks vision in pratical matters other than living in a small pre-fab house that I would buy if needed.

Going to Mars in that flying monstrous thirty engine design full of rocket fuel to Mars is a one way mission if it ever got there in my opinion. On Mars by 2025 I doubt it To the moon with his smaller payloads designs then yes they could do it.

If a dummy like me can foresee problems with FIRES with battery fed E.V.s sitting in water then he could have too. You might be right on hydrogen Auto's There Bob however. With Pink nuclear hydrogen being the stop gap measure to fusion technology.

Sooo....EVERY auto maker is an idiot because NONE of the vehicles mass produced in the last 10-15 years can survive a flood! No, gas/diesel ones won't end in a catastrophic fire BUT those also can't be sold to some poor soul that didn't know it was flood damaged.

A friend's Tundra was disabled by the dealership pressure washing under the hood. Slowly(over 2 weeks) it was ruined. Computer got wet, and eventually corroded and shorted out most everything on that GAS truck. They had to buy it back from him, it was ruined by a pressure washer......imagine what a flood would do.

    They build cars/trucks/vans NOT submarines!

    Just sayin'

Musk is filling a demand, and cannot be held responsible for people who treat his product incorrectly.

I suppose you think John Browning an idiot because he did not prevent his product from killing innocent people.🙄

Freedom and a submissive populace cannot co-exist.

That's right Don. If you live in Ft. Myers, next time a hurricane is coming, hop in your $105K Tesla and run up I-75 to Macon Ga. Get a room in the Holiday Inn Express for a few days. You can afford it.

No I think they should be warned before a purchase of the possible HAZARDS when flooded in water.Since petrol cars don't have this problem with massive heat intense fires when flooded. You have to wear a seat belt now, gosh I guess you think that is a personal right to wear or not to wear one while driving too! Too bad you have to because too many dumb people where killing themselves.

It has nothing to do with personal rights but to be concerned for the public at large.

I am not a fan of MANDATORY anything, including seat belt laws. I seem to recall one of the justifications for the seat belt laws was to keep medical costs down. It costs a fortune to give someone lifetime care for a serious accident. I have seen the results of serious car accidents and wear my seat belt religiously but if someone is stupid enough not to wear one it should be their own choice. Just don't ask me to subsidize their need for medical care that was brought on by stupidity.

As far as the purchase of an EV, you would have to be living in another dimension if you don't know the hazards of water and EV batteries. If someone purchases one without doing their research, it is on them. Some reports out of Florida blame the battery fires on the rapid corrosion brought on by salt water. Not necessarily the battery but all of the connections. If those short out and start a fire it can certainly spread to the battery. The same thing can happen to a fuel tank in an ICE vehicle if there is a car fire, but of course the battery fires are harder to extinguish. Bob

If I could afford a Tesla, I could also afford a garage well above sea level to keep it in.

I would not own an electrical auto where I live. Some people can't afford high insurance on Auto's. If Remember right some diesels had/have air intakes like a snorkel on a submarine. That is what I need down here on the gulf coastline! Buyer-beware B.S. is just a cop out to sell unworthy products to dummies in my opinion.

Design obsolescence is going to be a thing of the past with the coming energy crisis. Insurance is going to skyrocket soon everywhere and nobody is going to be able to afford it. You free thinkers for stupidly buyer beware B.S. are going to be in for a surprise under these new conditions we are moving into.
